GP officers cited for courage
From our weekly issue dated October 29, 2008
Two officers from Grants Pass Dept. of Public Safety each have been honored with a Distinguished Service Medal.
Medals were given on Wednesday, Oct. 15 to Officer Justin DeKruger and Officer Kris Ettner. They were recognized for their actions on May 20, 2008 “when they displayed outstanding courage while attempting to stop a mentally disturbed person as he attempted to drive away in a vehicle with two small children in the backseat.
“The subject fought with the officers and was able to place the vehicle in drive and accelerate away. The officers made a split-second decision and jumped into the vehicle to stop the subject with little regard for their own safety.
“The officers fought to gain control of the vehicle while trying to keep from being dragged underneath it. They were able to subdue the subject and get the vehicle stopped.
“This was after the vehicle traveled across a street, over a curb, and was finally stopped in some bushes only 15 feet from a house.”
