Scott M. Aaland

Former Cave Junction resident, Scott Michael Aaland, 54, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008 at his home.

Recitation of the Rosary will be conducted on Saturday, Nov. 1 at St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church in Cave Junction. A Memorial Mass will follow with Monsignor Gregory Moyes officiating.

Mr. Aaland was born on Oct. 18, 1954 in Seattle. On Sept. 13, 1980 he married Laura M. Sipiora. They lived in Cave Junction for 23 years before moving to Grants Pass 18 months ago. Mr. Aaland was known as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Despite his daily struggles of being in a wheelchair, he always had the biggest smile in the room.

His optimistic outlook and deep faith kept him going strong. He found happiness and laughter spending time with his wife of 26 years, Laura; his two daughters, Shawna and Danielle; son-in-law, Kevin Snavely; and granddaughters, Marley and Avery Snavely.

Besides his wife, daughters and grandchildren, he is survived by two brothers, Steve Aaland, of California, and Terry Aaland, of Cave Junction. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donna & Richard Aaland; and a sister, Lisa Wise.

Arrangements were by Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.

Lois M. Spencer

Previous Illinois Valley resident, Lois Merle Spencer, 92, who worked at the former Kerby Grade School, of Forest Grove, died on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008 at Jennings McCall II in Forest Grove.

Private interment will take place at Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove.

She was born on Nov. 9, 1915 in Portland, Ore., the daughter of William F. and Lilly (Howlin) Lovett. She grew-up in the Portland area and attended Portland schools and married Earl Spencer on July 7, 1934 at the Methodist Church in Vancouver, Wash.

They made their home in Portland, Beaverton, Silverton, Cave Junction and Grants Pass between 1950 and 1999, when she moved to Jennings-McCall in Forest Grove. Her husband, Earl, worked in the grocery business most of his life. They celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary before her husband died on Sept. 16, 2005.

Mrs. Spencer was a secretary at Kerby Grade School from 1954 until 1957, and at South Junior High School in Grants Pass from 1957 until 1977, when she retired.

She was a past member of Western Star Chapter 64 in Kerby and Reames Chapter 66 in Medford, and currently Home Star Chapter 187 in Forest Grove. Mrs. Spencer joined Eastern Star in 1949 and the Daughters of the Nile in 1956. She has been a soloist for the chapter for 43 years. She enjoyed music and sang for weddings, church and her Nile meetings. She enjoyed attending her Nile meetings very much and working with plastic canvas.

The family suggests memorial remembrances to the Masonic and Eastern Star Home Endowment Fund, 2221 Oak St., Forest Grove OR 97116.

Surviving are two sons Wayne A. Spencer, and Ronald W. Spencer, both of Grants Pass; a daughter, Carole J. Johnson of Aloha, Ore.; a brother, Wendall “Dean” Lovett of Portland; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
