Frances Low

No service is planned for Selma resident Frances Low, 86, who died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass.

Mrs. Low was born on Aug. 14, 1922 in Perry, Okla. On Aug. 6, 1940 in Los Angeles she married Mathew W. Low. She was known as a loving wife and mother. She moved from California to Selma 28 years ago.

Mrs. Low was a lifetime member of the Roman Catholic Church and had attended St. Anne Catholic Church and St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church for the past 28 years.

Her hobbies included sewing, knitting, and oil painting.

Besides her husband, Mathew Low, of Selma; she is survived by a son, Ron Low, of Santa Clarita, Calif.; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a niece.

She was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Low.

Wayne Petsch

Former longtime Illinois Valley resident, Wayne Cyril Petsch, 86, died Sept. 3, 2008 at McCook Community Hospital in McCook, Neb.

Mr. Petsch was born near Wauneta, Neb. on Dec. 30, 1921, the son of the late Guy F. & Jessie Emma (Crosson) Petsch Crampton. On Feb. 28, 1940, Mr. Petsch joined the U.S. Navy in which he spent three years as a Chief Motor Machinists Mate on the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill during World War II.

On July 14, 1945, he married Mildred “Millie” Elizabeth Anderson in Bremerton, Wash. The couple and their three children made their home for 20 years in Cave Junction, where Mr. Petsch was superintendent at Forest Green Lumber Co. After his stepfather died in 1968, Wayne and Millie moved to Nebraska, where they farmed and ranched.

He enjoyed being with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved his antique cars, watching Husker football, and hunting. He was a member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in McCook, the Palisade American Legion Post and VFW, McCook Elks Lodge 1434 and Kerby Belt Masonic Lodge 18 AF&AM of Kerby.

He is survived by his wife, Millie Petsch, of Palisade, Nev.; a son, Gregory Petsch, of Bend, Ore.; two daughters, Suzanne Byers, of Salem, Ore., and Janilue Little, of McCook; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Harry Petsch; and many other relatives. He also leaves behind many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather; and a brother, Wylie Petsch.

Gladys May Conroy

A private family service will be held for Selma resident Gladys May Conroy, 92, who died Friday, Oct. 17, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Conroy was born on July 18, 1916 in Bloomfield, Conn. to Frank & Edna (Jewell) Hurlburt. She lived in Connecticut all her life until moving to Selma a couple of years ago.

In 1940 she married Harold E. Conroy. They were married for 35 years and later divorced. She began her employment career as a sales clerk for women’s clothing and apparel in several stores including Lord & Taylor, and Burlington Coats. She became a store manager, working in the industry for 35 years.

Mrs. Conroy was actively involved in amateur theater in Hartford, Conn. for approximately 15 years. She continued to follow the theater, and enjoyed music and reading.

She is survived by a son, Tom Conroy, of Selma; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Two sons, William Conroy and Michael Conroy, died in 2006 and 1991 respectively.

Memorial donations can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Chapel of the Valley-L.B. Hall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
