A time of “tough going,” but tempered with optimism for improvement, is cited by head football coach Ray Yarbrough following a 42-0 loss in the Skyline Conference opener for Illinois Valley.

The Cougars played in rain against North Valley on the Knights’ field Friday night, Oct. 3. I.V. was held to 201 total yards by a much-larger team.

North Valley, which amassed a yardage figure of 446, led 21-0 at the half.

The Cougars, (0-1) in the Skyline, will play in Cave Junction on Friday, Oct. 10 against Phoenix (0-1). The game will begin at 7 p.m.

“Watching the game film,” said Yarbrough, “it came down to the fact that North Valley has a pretty big team. In fact, they have around 35 kids while we have a total of 16 varsity players.

“Our team did a good job against big odds and big players. We will get ‘em (victories) eventually,” he said.

Against NV, running back Lance Tausaga turned in more than half of I.V.’s yardage. He ran the ball 10 times for 102 yards. Coug quarterback Roger Hults was 12-of-37, passing for 108 yards. He was intercepted three times.

Cougar F-S Victorious

The Cougar frosh/soph team was victorious 28-14 against the Knights on Thursday, Oct. 2 on the I.V. field.

Yarbrough said that Bryan Biggs threw three TD passes and ran one in. The passes were to Fred Hults, Curtis Paulson and Jamie Reviea.
