SWEET SUITE - Shasta Fudge/Candy & More in Downtown Cave Junction is open Tuesdays through Saturdays. The new business, next door to King’s Chinese Cuisine and across from Shop Smart Food Warehouse, is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The store offers a wide range of fudge and other goodies.
TOUGH GUYS - I.V. Youth Wrestling sign-ups will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 8 and 9, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Illinois Valley High School wrestling room. Participants can have fun and learn life skills, sponsors said. The $45 fee includes insurance and a wrestlers card. First-time wrestlers need to bring their birth certificate. ‘FOLKS’ & FIREFIGHTERS - On Saturday, Oct. 11 a home-style fund-raiser with chili and hamburgers for Illinois Valley Volunteer Firefighters Association will be hosted by Country Folks restaurant in Selma. During the event, from 2 to 6 p.m., volunteer firefighters will wait tables and collect fees. Proceeds will go for items not paid for by I.V. Fire Protection District. There will be a Guitar Hero video contest, a raffle for a Kristy Lee Cook autographed photo and a CD; plus Sparky the Fire Dog will be on hand for photos with children.
GOT 4-H? - An open house will be held by 4-H of Josephine County on Saturday, Oct. 11. The program is for youth from 9 to 18 years of age. The gathering will be held at the OSU Extension Service auditorium, 215 Ringuette St. in Grants Pass. There will be games and hands-on activities to demonstrate many of the 4-H activities. Youth can drop in any time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. For more information, phone Chris Names at 476-6613.
VETERANS’ VOICE - Those who served in the U.S. military can speak with a veterans service officer about obtaining help at the Glenn Morrison American Legion Post 70 Hall at 2110 Caves Hwy. HOME ON THE RANGE - The Harvest Kitchen free lunch program in Cave Junction is looking for a new coordinator. Linda Butler, currently in the volunteer job, has served (in many ways and at plenty of meals) for more than eight years. She said that she wants to have more free time to work with children in the valley community. Butler added, “Being coordinator has been quite rewarding, and I am willing to fully train a new coordinator. I will remain involved with the kitchen as a volunteer.” More information about the Harvest Kitchen post, which uses space at St. Matthias Episcopal Church, is available by phoning Butler at 597-4383.
HAUNTING QUESTION - The Illinois Valley High School Senior Class Grad Night Committee still is looking for volunteers and prop donations for its haunted house at Jubilee Park. ‘CHOCOLATE SUNDAY’ - Coming on Sunday, Oct. 26: Speak Up and Sing Out! plus “Chocolate Sunday” by Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance (IVSHA). The event at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Cave Junction, open to the public, will feature the Libby Goines Trio for singing out; the IVSHA staff for speaking up; “and chocolate in all its glorious forms.” Among the offerings will be chocolate cake by Kate Dwyer Catering. GOOD BITE - Boys & Girls Club of the Rogue Valley will present the second annual Bite of the Rogue Valley event on Saturday, Oct. 18 at Jackson County Expo from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Said the sponsor, “This is a great food-and-fun event involving more than 25 area restaurants, wineries and breweries; plus entertainment, an ice-carving competition, the ever-popular Iron Chef competition, and more.” The event benefits the five clubs in Illinois Valley, White City, Phoenix, Talent, and Grants Pass.
NOTEPAD - A yard sale and car wash to raise funds for I.V. Wrestling Club will be held Saturday, Oct. 11 on the Sterling Savings Bank parking lot in Cave Junction from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. … National Fire Prevention Week is being observed through Saturday, Oct. 11. Our Illinois Valley staff and volunteer firefighters are people of distinguished “extinguishment” … Dome School in Takilma is the site for an informal presentation by I.V. Fire Protection District on Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. regarding Ballot Measure 17-21. Open discussion will follow ... Does duct taping a computer connection to make it work make the user a red neck? That’s the question posed by one Cave Junction woman who found that duct tape works just fine to keep her computer operating … “The American Dream” of owning a home is the topic for a free workshop, including lunch, on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Harbeck Road branch of SOFCU Community Credit Union in Grants Pass.
