Robert Lee Allen

Selma resident Robert Lee Allen, 75, after many years battling diabetes, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2008 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass.

Interment will be held on Friday, Oct. 3, at 11 a.m. at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mr. Allen was born on Feb. 25, 1933 in Colorado Springs, Colo. to Marvin & Margaret Allen. He served in the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps, and saw combat during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he worked as a mechanic for Pan American Airlines, retiring after 26 years.

Robert was also a professional motocross racer.

He is survived by his loving children, Wendy Allen and Mary Escalante, of Cave Junction; Robert Allen Jr. and Cliff Allen, of Grants Pass; Robin Allen, Karen Daley and William Allen, of Fairbanks, Alaska; 25 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and two nieces. He also leaves behind many friends including John Scott and Carl Wartz.He was preceded in death by his parents.

Delores Glodean Nolan

A memorial gathering for Delores Nolan, 76, a resident of Illinois Valley since 1945, who died Sept. 25, 2008 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass, will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 at Illinois Valley Grange Hall, 3763 Holland Loop.

She was born Delores Glodean Campbell, to Robert Jennings Campbell & Mary Angie Neil Campbell Wallace, on Dec. 28, 1932 in Bloomington, Ind. She was the youngest of four children including brothers Joseph Robert “Bobby” Campbell, Delbert Blaine Campbell, and LeHena Marcheta (Campbell) Owen. She lived in and around Bloomington and nearby Dolan until the age of 12.

In 1945 with her sister she rode a train west. Meeting their mother in Colorado they took a bus to Kerby, Ore. She attended Kerby Grade School and Kerby Union High School. She held a variety of jobs in the valley including working at restaurants (some operated by her mother) starting at the age of 12. She also worked at the late Larry Musil’s theater, and drive-in theater, among other odd jobs.

In 1951, she married Illinois Valley smokejumper Robert “Bob” Nolan. She became a mother and housekeeper with the arrival of their two children, Mary Lucille (Nolan) Hansen and John Robert Nolan. For many years Nolan operated a logging company in the valley. In 1961, the couple built and operated Bob’s Drive-Up, now Subway.

Delores was known as a hard-working, intelligent woman who was an active part of her community. In later years she had volunteered with Meals on Wheels; had been on the board of the senior center; and was a judge for middle school speech competitions. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, and other games. She was fond of saying that she loved her family with the deepest, deepest, passion in the world.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Bob Nolan; a sister, Marcheta Owen, of Hiouchi, Calif.; her children, Mary Hansen, of Grants Pass, and John Nolan, of Cave Junction; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a large extended family and many friends.

Delores was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Clarence Wallace; and her brothers, Bobby Campbell and Delbert Campbell.

Hull and Hull Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements including cremation.

Charles W. McNeil

Charles W. McNeil, 63, of Cave Junction, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008 at Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle.

A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 at Eagle Point National Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral directors are in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McNeil was born on June 28, 1945 in Kansas City, Mo. to Mary & Gordon McNeil. From Jan. 16, 1964 to April 16, 1966 he served in the U.S. Navy. He lived in Las Vegas, Nev. until moving to Cave Junction two years ago.

He volunteered with the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office. He enjoyed listening to music, reading, and his dogs.

Survivors include three sisters, Lee Renderman, of Cave Junction, Louise Bailey, of Kansas City, and Carmelita Cooke, of Salt Lake City; and two brothers, Robert McNeil, of Kenosha, Wis., and Alfred McNeil of Wichita, Kan.
