GOLF!

- Wednesday, Oct. 1 is the deadline to sign up for GolftoberFest, a fund-raiser for the Illinois Valley Section of the Boys & Girls Club that will be held at I.V. Golf Course. FIRE COLORING CONTEST

- Friday, Oct. 3 is the deadline for a coloring contest/fire awareness poster contest in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week; Sunday through Sunday, Oct. 5 to 12. The theme of the contest, sponsored by Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD), is “Prevent Home Fires.” Color pages and posters will be accepted at IVFD headquarters, 681 Caves Hwy., from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Posters must be based on the theme. Entries will be displayed at headquarters and be judged by IVFD volunteers. Prizes will be issued after Oct. 20.

ST. PAT’S OKTOBERFEST

- A beer garden, children’s games, bingo and food will be among attractions Saturday, Oct. 4 at St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church in Cave Junction. The event on W. River Street, with a crafts fair, will run from noon to 6 p.m. The menu will include Taylor’s sausage and hot dogs, plus German potato salad. Visit stpatsoktoberfest.com for more info.

AID FOR VETS

- Those who served in the military can talk about obtaining assistance with a veterans service officer at the Glenn Morrison American Legion Post 70 Hall at 2110 Caves Hwy. The officer will be available on two Saturdays, Oct. 4 and 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more info, phone “Frank or Kay” at 597-8505.

DANGEROUS STUFF

- A free Hazardous Waste Collection Day for home owners will be held Saturday, Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Southern Oregon Sanitation, 1381 Redwood Ave., in Grants Pass. Appointments are not necessary for the event, co-hosted by Josephine County Solid Waste Agency, and Oregon Dept. of Environmental Quality. Acceptable items include oil-based paint, household cleaners, solvents, batteries, herbicides, gasoline, fertilizer, swimming pool chemicals, mercury thermometers, varnishes, automotive fluids and aerosol cans. A limited number of digital thermometers are available in trade for recycled mercury ones. Appointments are required for those wanting to get rid of conditionally exempt generators. WRESTLING SKILLS

- I.V. Youth Wrestling sign-ups will be held Monday, Oct. 6, and Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 8 and 9 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the I.V. High School wrestling room. Participants can have fun and learn life skills, sponsors said. The $45 fee includes insurance and a wrestlers card. First-time wrestlers need to bring their birth certificate. HOMEBUYER ED

- A free workshop to help people attain “The American Dream” of owning their own home will be held Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Harbeck Road branch of SOFCU Community Credit Union in Grants Pass. It’s a HUD-approved workshop, and will include prizes and games. Plus, SOFCU will provide lunch. - A toy run to benefit children in Siskiyou Community Health Center (SCHC) outreach programs will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 5 at the Josephine County Fairgrounds by ABATE Motorcycle Club. The club is seeking donations of cash, auction or raffle items. All donations are tax-deductible, and all proceeds go to SCHC.
