John S. Hocker
Former Cave Junction real estate agent and well-known community member John Stanley Hocker, 82, of Grants Pass, died on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass.

Mr. Hocker, born on Nov. 17, 1925 in Bethlehem, Pa. to John S. Hocker & Ruth Geyer Hocker, was raised in Johnstown, Pa. After serving in the U.S. Naval Air Corps at the end of World War II, he graduated from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. In 1949 he moved to Los Angeles and married Mildred Scott from Johnstown, Pa.
After her death, Mr. Hocker married Libby Hocker in 1974. The Hockers moved from Southern California in 1981 and lived in Cave Junction for 18 years before moving to Rogue River and then Grants Pass.
Mr. Hocker had a long career in the insurance industry in which he attained the advanced designations of Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter. His career in the Los Angeles area included working for large insurance companies as well as being a partner in small agencies in Santa Monica, Encino, and Canoga Park.
After tiring of playing golf badly as a retiree, John joined the former Elmore & Spieth Real Estate office in Cave Junction. He later became a founding partner in Oregon Mountain Real Estate in Cave Junction.
He was a member of Kerby Belt Masonic Lodge 18 AF&AM in Kerby, and served as a volunteer on the board of Illinois Valley Rural Fire Protection District for many years. While living in Cave Junction he was an active member of the Christian Science Society. He also was a member of the former Toastmasters Club in Cave Junction.
John was an ardent reader and enjoyed writing his memoirs and short stories, many of which were published in his book, Mixed Nuts. He enjoyed playing cards with the Grants Pass Duplicate Bridge Club.

Besides his wife, Libby, of Grants Pass, he is survived by three sons, Chris Hocker, of Redding, Conn., Dave Hocker, of Cave Junction, and Bob Scott, of Ashland; and six grandchildren.
His parents; two brothers, Robert and Donald; and his first wife, Mildred, died before he did.
Arrangements for Mr. Hocker are through Hull & Hull Funeral Directors.
Joseph W. Fehlhaber
Joseph Wyatt Fehlhaber, 21, of Cave Junction, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 at home.

Joseph was born on Feb. 13, 1987 in Takilma and attended valley schools. He enjoyed writing, listening to music, playing his base guitar, watching movies on TV and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include his parents, Ronald Fehlhaber and Meshelle Adams, both of Cave Junction; a brother, Jedediah Fehlhaber, of Medford; three sisters, Suzi Fehlhaber and Misty Bipat, both of Medford, and Shawna Halle, of Plymouth, Wis.; paternal grandparents, Bud Fehlhaber, of Lawton, Okla., and Ila Sullivan of Escondido, Calif.; maternal grandfather, Ernest Adams, of Guys, Tenn., a nephew; and many aunts and uncles.
Illinois Valley Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements.
