Chateau Octoberfest on tap for Friday & Saturday

From our weekly issue dated September 24, 2008

Shake out your lederhosen, tune up your yodel, and get your dancing shoes ready for some polkas --Oktoberfest is coming.

The Chateau at the Oregon Caves will celebrate Oktoberfest on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26 and 27 from 5 to 9 p.m. The band, Jefferson, will perform each evening, said Sue Williams, of Illinois Valley Community Development Organization, and will feature band member Ron Langford on accordion for polka and beer hall music.

The Chateau will offer an array of standard and seasonal brews from the region’s breweries for attendees. Beers will be available by the glass or attendees can buy a “sampler” card and taste test several of the unique brews. A meat-and-cheese platter will be available.

Besides the regular dinner menu, Williams states, the chef is preparing a few German selections. “Enjoy a great dinner in the Chateau’s intimate dining room and dance off the calories upstairs,” she said.

The original Oktoberfest was a festival in Munich, Germany, in October 1810, celebrating the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghousen.

The festival was such a success that the German citizens agreed that it would take place each year without exception. (Since 1810, the festival has only been canceled five times: three times for wars and twice for cholera epidemics.) The length of the festival has varied during the years from just a few days to nearly 20. The timing was moved from the October timeframe into the latter part of September because the Bavarian weather in September is warmer (and just might create a stronger thirst). Most of the festivals in the United States and around the world are celebrated in the last half of September through the first week of October.

A standard feature of Oktoberfest is the availability of unique seasonal beers. The most well-known is “Marzen,” an amber-colored beer brewed in March and left to ferment through the summer. The Chateau will be offering several pale- to dark- amber lagers along with a selection of ales from regional micro-breweries.
