BLM Public Lands Day event will improve botanical area

A Public Lands Day event focusing on improving the Eight Dollar Mountain Botanical Site will be held by the Bureau of Land Management on Saturday, Sept. 27.

The site is a popular recreation and environmentally significant area, BLM said.site, located at a unique Darlingtonia fen (California Pitcher Plant – carnivorous) already has an accessible boardwalk androom, BLM said.

With the help of volunteers, a 1-mile hiking-only trail will be constructed from the Eight Dollar Mountain parking area to Illinois River. The new trail will provide visitors and school groupseducational and recreational opportunities.

Volunteers also will apply a weather-resistant stain to the handrail on the boardwalk which leads into the Darlingtonia fen - one of the most accessible fens in Southwestern Oregon. Children, with parental supervision, are encouraged by BLM to participate in the work projects.

Tools, snacks, and refreshments will be provided.National Public Lands Day posters, T-shirts, and hats will be given to all volunteers. Everyone who participates also is invited to attend the appreciation lunch at Lake Selmac afterward.

Volunteers will need to bring gloves, sunscreen, and tools if they have them (loppers, shovels).For safety, long pants, long-sleeve shirts, and boots are recommended.

Schedule for Eight Dollar Mountain event:to 9:30 a.m., registration and crew assignments; 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., crews will work on trail construction and boardwalk handrail staining; 1 to 1:30 p.m., wrap up projects, return tools, and drive to Lake Selmac;:30 to 2:30 p.m., lunch and interpretive exhibits.
