Benefit set for Coultas, Renno
From our weekly issue dated August 27, 2008
Through an outpouring of support from friends and neighbors of two Illinois Valley residents involved in the Iron 44 Incident, a fund-raising event will be held Saturday, Sept. 6 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Lake Selmac.
Proceeds from Fun in the Sun, an all-day event, will go to assist with paying medical bills for helicopter pilot Bill Coultas, 44, who was seriously burned in the fire-fighting accident in Northern California on Aug. 5. Funds also will go to the family of Steven “Caleb” Renno, 21, an Illinois Valley High School graduate and firefighter who died in the crash.
Josephine County Parks Dept. has graciously donated use of the Boy Scout Area at Lake Selmac for the event, which will feature music, food and fun activities for youngsters. Admission is $10 (children 13 and younger will be admitted free), and attendees will receive a hand stamp so that they may come and go throughout the day.
Attendees can bring lawn chairs or a blanket. And they can pack a picnic or enjoy beverages and grilled hot dogs from Taylor’s Sausage at the site with proceeds going to the benefit.
Four bands have agreed to donate their energies to the benefit. A varied selection will be performed by Southern Oregon Blues Band, Butch Martin and the Rogue Valley Riders, Jefferson, and Wally Aiken
“Thanks to the parks department and all the band members for donating your time and talent,” said event coordinator Cindy (Martinho) Scott. “Without you this wouldn’t be happening.”
“Annie the Clown” and Fantasy Face-Painting are among activities for children. Jim Frick, of Century 21 Harris & Taylor, has offered to conduct an auction for which donations are sought. Phone 592-3181 or 450-8777 to donate items. Josephine County Search And Rescue also has offered to help, with safety and security.
Additional bands, kids activities and vendors are sought. Phone 592-2541 for more information.

Additionally, an account has been established at SOFCU Community Credit Union to collect donations and receive funds to assist with medical bills for Coultas. Funds also will go to the family of Renno.
Donations can be made to the “Benefit Account for Bill Coultas and Caleb Renno” at any SOFCU site. Proceeds from the planned Fun in the Sun benefit also will go into the account.
