Hugh E. Gardner

A family service is planned for Hugh E. Gardner, 91, of Grants Pass, who died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008 at a Grants Pass nursing center.

Mr. Gardner was born on June 14, 1917 in Bakersfield, Calif. to John & Lula (Graham) Gardner. He was raised in Bakersfield and attended college there. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army in Germany.

On April 6, 1946 he married Amy E. Takalo, a Red Cross worker. They went to Japan during the Occupation, and their daughter, Joyce, was born there. In March 2005 he moved from Santa Ynez, Calif. to Grants Pass.

His hobbies included fishing, golfing, playing pool, backpacking, cross-country skiing, swimming, and scale-model trains.

Surviving are a daughter, Joyce E. Waterman, of Cave Junction; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
