WHEEL DEAL - A free Bicycle Repair Clinic will be held Thursday, Aug. 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Frog Farm, 9044 Takilma Road. Bike mechanics will be present, and those who want to volunteer are requested. This event, hosted by Spiral Living Center, will be the first in a series of clinics intended to promote bicycle use in Illinois Valley. There also will be a workshop on making bucket panniers from 9 to 11 a.m. Donations of good bike tires, brake pads, tubes and possibly other parts also could be used. I.V. HIGH ENROLLING - Registration will be held at Illinois Valley High School on Wednesday, Aug. 20 from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and on Thursday, Aug. 21 from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Parents and students can fill out paperwork during those times. Students can be assigned lockers when papers are completed. The 20th and 21st are the only days during which registration forms can be submitted until classes begin on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

CHORALE CORRAL - The Three Rivers Chorale, directed by Dave Marston, will begin its fall session Monday, Aug. 25 at 7:30 p.m. Rehearsals are held at the Center for Spiritual Living at 466 S.W. I St. in Grants Pass. Performances will be held Dec. 6 in Cave Junction and Dec. 7 in GP. Membership is by auditions, which will be held after the first rehearsal. There is a fee. “Several singers drive from Cave Junction, so ride-sharing is a possibility,” said Rachel Winters, board chairman. She can be contacted at 476-6243.

FESTIVAL A’COMING - The Illinois Valley Lions Club Labor Day Festival is fast approaching and again will offer an array of activities. The festival is provided by the I.V. Lions as a means of thanking the community for its continued support throughout the year. The club provides Sight & Hearing, and scholarship awards, plus hospital/medical equipment loans for valley residents. The festival theme is “Illinois Valley: We Grow Trees & Championship Athletes,” and is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 30 through Sept. 1 in Jubilee Park in Cave Junction.

The Tough Truck Races again will be one of the main features with competition scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. Cash prizes will be awarded to the first- through third-place winners. For entry information phone Jerry Sommers at 592-2603.

The Labor Day Parade will be held Monday, Sept. 1 in Downtown Cave Junction. For parade information contact Harry Johnson at 596-2104. The grand marshal is Lewie Spencer – a longtime valley resident and Lion Club member. Also honored this year are the Helen Keller Award recipients: Richard Strohl and David Anderson.

The Talent Show will be featured again during the festival and is open to amateurs of all ages. Juniors will perform on Saturday, Intermediates on Sunday and Adults on Monday. As always there will be booths with a variety of delicious food including Lion Burgers, and many vendors offering a selection of arts, crafts, games and food. Music will be provided by Moon & the Lunatics on Saturday evening, Gospel by 1st Love Fellowship on Sunday morning, T.J. and the Spurs on Sunday evening, and Dale Hopper on Monday afternoon. The greased-pole currency climb, haystack money search and watermelon seed-spitting contest will be just a few of the events for youngsters.

Last but not least – a new 2008 Dynalow Rider 105th Anniversary Edition Harley Davidson will be raffled on Monday, Sept. 1. The bike is displayed at Taylor’s Country Store, and tickets are available there.

Other events and highlights in this year’s festivities will include the Lions Train with free rides, bingo games, breakfast, food booths, vendor booths, dunk tank, karaoke and many activities for the kiddies. Watch future editions of Illinois Valley News for festival updates.

PARADE DETOUR & ROUTE - Because of the annual Labor Day Parade sponsored by Illinois Valley Lions Club, Hwy. 199/Redwood Hwy. will be closed from Laurel Road to Hwy. 46/Caves Hwy. from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Monday, Sept. 1. The parade will begin at River Street and move south on Redwood Hwy., ending at Watkins Street at Shop Smart Food Warehouse. In previous years, the parade has ended at Caves Hwy. Judges will be in front of Home Valley Bank. “There will be lots of fun and candy for the kids,” said I.V. Lions Club. “We’re still accepting entries from individuals and organizations. NOTEPAD - Evergreen Elementary School is enrolling new students. Office hours are 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Parents should bring their children’s proof of birth and immunization record ... Open bingo games are held at Illinois Valley Senior Center on E. River Street in Cave Junction on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Food is available beginning at 5:30 … Five AM will perform on Tuesday, Aug. 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Riverside Park during the final free concert of 2008 sponsored by Grants Pass Chamber of Commerce ... GolfToberFest, a golf tournament fund-raiser for the Illinois Valley Branch of Boys & Girls Club, will be held Oct. 11 at I.V. Golf Course. Sign-up deadline is Oct. 1.
