Harvest Kitchen, one of the programs that provides free lunches to all comers in Cave Junction, is closed until Monday, Sept. 8.
Operated by volunteers using St. Matthias Episcopal Church facilities, the community service will resume with its hours listed as 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays.
“We have been serving an average of 120 to 140 meals per week,” said Linda Butler, coordinator. “We have a slate of 10 volunteers who give their time to prepare and serve the meals.
“Many churches and individuals in the community provide financial support and donate food,” she said. “We do not serve only the ‘transient’ population, as can be seen from the number of people we serve.

“Most of our patrons are not homeless, but just do not have enough money to get through the month without help,” Butler said.
She added that although there has been vandalism at the site, the principle reason for the temporary closure is to provide a summer break for the volunteers.
