Efforts to clean up Cave Junction have hit another roadblock with the somewhat mysterious disappearance of 40 washers and dryers.

Judy Thomas turned her key in the lock of Judy’s Brown Barn Laundry on Sunday, July 27, and found only a blue tarp inside.

Approximately 40 commercial washers and dryers had been removed from 120 S. Hussey Ave. overnight. Nothing was broken to gain entry, but the building was gutted, right down to the clock on the wall.

Thomas’ daughter, who lived in an apartment upstairs, was away for the weekend.

Josephine County Sheriff’s Office was telephoned on Sunday, and was to respond sometime after 6 p.m. Monday. Surveillance videotapes from Art’s Red Garter Steak House & Saloon possibly could provide clues.

Thomas is worried for her community members, who depend on the Brown Barn for laundry and shower facilities.

“I would tell the street people to come in and take a shower, I was sick of smelling them. They thought I was a mean woman,” said the spunky citizen.

Thomas, known to many from her waitress days at the former Boarding House Reach Restaurant (now Country Folks restaurant in Selma), has been leasing the laundry for nearly a year. Her main concern now is returning clothing to her customers.

She made some deliveries on Monday, July 28, and is requesting that customers phone her at 597-2095 to make arrangements to get their clean laundry.
