MUSIC AL FRESCO - On Thursday, July 24, Dandelion Jo will play for Concerts in the Park from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Jubilee Park in Cave Junction. The concert is free to attendees. Barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs, and soft drinks will be available. Attendees should bring chairs. The audience, with Howard Hill of Antique Alley Custom Rod Shop hawking tickets, also can participate in the 50-50 raffle, used by the chamber to pay for the musicians. The annual concert series is sponsored by Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce.
PASTA POINT - A spaghetti feed fund-raiser with live music will be held Saturday, July 26 by Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance. It will begin at 6 p.m. at the alliance building on Lister Street next to the DMV office. Admission will be by donation. Grace Auzenne, an alliance advocate, and her husband, Ron, known as good cooks, are putting on the benefit.
MEMORIAL EFFORT - An effort is under way by family members including Linda Sallman, of Art’s Red Garter Restaurant & Lounge in Cave Junction, regarding the John F. Fleming Memorial Park in the city of Rogue River. Fleming, who served in Vietnam and died there in Danang in 1967, was Sallman’s brother. The land for his memorial, which has been allowed to deteriorate along with other memorials for veterans at the site, was donated by Sallman’s parents, Charles & Marian Fleming. The family says that Jackson County and Rogue River need to fix up the park, which has been neglected and vandalized.
LOVEJOY LEARNIN’ - Free training for those who want to find out about becoming a volunteer with Lovejoy Hospice will begin in September. The deadline to apply is Aug. 25. People can sign up or ask questions by phoning 474-1193. “Consider volunteering either with patients and their families, or in the hospice office,” said Lovejoy. It added, “Volunteers are at the very heart of the Lovejoy Hospice team and are indispensable.”
WHEEL DEAL - Spiral Living Center will host a free Bike Repair Clinic on Thursday, Aug. 21. Bike mechanics to be on hand to help repair bikes are requested. This event will be the first in a series of clinics intended to promote bicycle use in Illinois Valley. There also will be a workshop on making bucket panniers, so donations of square-sided buckets are needed. Donations of good-quality bike tires, brake pads, tubes and possibly other parts also could be used. Those who can help with any aspect of the project can phone 592-3722.
NOTEPAD - A ground-breaking ceremony for the RCC Business Entrepreneurial Center will be held for all comers on Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. at the RCC Kerby Belt Bldg. ... An outdoor service and potluck picnic is set for Sunday, July 27 by Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Phone 592-2290 for details … The trio Indubious will present Reggae With a Positive Message on Tuesday, July 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Riverside Park during a free concert sponsored by Grants Pass Chamber of Commerce ... One woman’s comment after attending an outdoor event: “It was good to have a live band. Dead bands are no fun” … The tourist attendance at Illinois Valley Visitor Center was 1,740 during June, a rise of 335 from June ‘07, reports Dulcie Moore, I.V. Chamber secretary and office manager … Mid-Rogue Rural Fire Protection District and its formation, plus a slate of directors, will be on the Nov. 4 ballot. The district would cover areas now without a fire protection district. JoCo commissioners voted 2-1 to place it on the ballot. Jim Raffenburg voted “no” while Dave Toler and Dwight Ellis are in favor ... T-shirt: Ever stop to think, and then never start again? ...
