LOVE A PARADE? - Illinois Valley Lions Club is looking for participants and floats for the annual Labor Day Parade on Sept. 1 in Downtown Cave Junction. “We’re looking for entries in your parade,” said club member Harry Johnson. “If you’re a business, club or other organization, this is an opportunity to show yourself off to your community.” For more information phone Johnson at 596-2104.

‘TWIST & SHOUT’ - Broadway Phil & The Shouters will perform for Concerts in the Park, sponsored by Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce, on Thursday, July 10. Each concert in the series in Jubilee Park in Cave Junction runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs, and soft drinks are available. Concert-goers should bring their own chairs. The audience also can participate in the 50-50 raffle, used by the chamber to pay for the musicians. Enthusiasm for the raffle is promoted by top ticket-seller Howard Hill, of Antique Alley Custom Rod Shop in Cave Junction.

MASONIC HAPPENING - Kerbyville Masons on Saturday, July 12 will observe the 150th anniversary of the lodge founding. The public can attend an open house, beginning with a special ceremony at 11 a.m. at the RCC Kerby Belt Bldg. in Kerby across from Joe’s Market. The ritual, an ancient tradition perpetuated by Masons for public buildings, will involve setting a Ceremonial Cornerstone by the Grand Master of Masons in Oregon and his Grand Officers. The open house will last until 1 p.m.

BUZZING BUSINESS - Radio-controlled model aircraft and boats will be featured at Lake Selmac on Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13. There is no charge for spectators. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. The annual Float & Fly is sponsored by Rogue Valley Flyers AMA 1408.

SELMAC CHRISTMAS - Christmas For Kids SDC will conduct a trail ride fund-raiser Saturday, July 12 at Lake Selmac. It will begin at noon. The family event, to benefit Illinois Valley children, is to include hay rides by Dan Jordan, vendors with food and beverages, and opportunities for children to have their photo taken with a pony. QUILT SHOW DEADLINE - Spaces are still available for Illinois Valley quilters who want to participate in the Aug. 15 and 16 Valley Girls Quilt Show. Applications are available at Picket Fence Fabrics, 379 Caves Hwy. in Cave Junction and must be returned by Tuesday, July 15. SCHOOLS CHANGE - Erica Lundberg, who has been athletic/activities secretary at Illinois Valley High School, will be office manager at Evergreen Elementary School come September. Her replacement at IVHS will be Robin Jackson, who has been working at Lorna Byrne Middle School.

WHO DOES WHAT - A man and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the morning coffee. The wife said, “You should do it because you get up first, and then we don’t have to wait as long to get our coffee.” The husband said, “You are in charge of cooking around here and you should do it, because that is your job.” Wife replies, “No, you should do it, and besides, it’s in the Bible that the man should do the coffee.” Husband replies, “I can’t believe that, show me.” So she fetched their Bible, opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of several pages, where it reads, “Hebrews.”

NOTEPAD - The Hoskins Family of Illinois Valley, it was noted during Reunionmania last weekend, has “a class of its own,” as 31 members are graduates of valley high schools … One Horse Shy from Ashland will perform Tuesday, July 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Riverside Park during a free concert sponsored by Grants Pass Chamber of Commerce ... A Junior Savings Program fund-raiser planned for July 12 has been canceled. Those who want to support the project for valley youth can phone Les & Pat Lesiecki at 592-2999 ... Newspaper goofs: In partnership with her brother, operating a small precision machine shop, she and her brothel received the U.S. Navy’s “E” for Excellence Award … As a presidential candidate who avoids alcohol, he said, “I’d rather be tight than president” … Turbulence caused food and drunks to be tossed onto the floor of the aircraft … A woman was injured when the defendant’s car sideswiped hers, ramming her can into a narrow alley.
