Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB) has approved a grant to help purchase the 870-acre Deer Creek Ranch property outside of Selma. A draft of the grant agreement was presented at a public meeting at the Deer Creek Center, which is the recipient of the $500,000 grant.
Melissa Leoni, senior policy coordinator for OWEB, explained that along with the funding, a conservation easement, or recorded deed restriction, is placed on the property, ensuring that, for its “investment,” OWEB’s core mission of creating and maintaining or restoring watersheds, water quality and native salmonid habitat is addressed.
The Deer Creek Center was incorporated in late 2007 as a 501c(3) nonprofit organization. Its board consists of representatives from the Southern Oregon University Foundation and the Siskiyou Field Institute, which have been partnering in the effort to develop Deer Creek Ranch into an education and field research station. The location provides convenient access to diverse geologic areas, plant communities, and salmon-bearing streams.
Significant renovation and construction activities have been underway at Deer Creek Center, including a new yurt, parking, restroom facilities and a state of the art septic system. Camping, dorms and private rooms are available for those enrolled in Siskiyou Field Institute courses or for groups attending a conference at the site.
