Hunting group cites JoCo chapter, leader

The Josephine County Chapter of Oregon Hunters Association (OHA) and its president have received top recognition from the organization.
Each year OHA presents 10 awards to individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to Oregon’s wildlife, habitat and hunters during the previous year.

OHA recognized Brett Loper as Member of the Year in the Organizational Category. The award states:
“As president of the Josephine County Chapter, Brett Loper has boosted chapter membership and participation in youth programs and the annual chapter fund-raising banquet. He is a valuable asset to OHA and Josephine County.”
For Chapter of the Year, the Josephine County Chapter was honored with the top award. The citation reads:
“During 2007, the Josephine County Chapter of OHA made significant contributions to hunters, hunting and wildlife.
“Its accomplishments included work on a number of habitat improvement projects, Youth Day sponsorship and donations to a variety of studies and projects to benefit Oregon’s wildlife populations including nearly $7,000 for habitat improvements.”

OHA also honored Jeff VonKienast, a biologist with the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. He was recognized for his work in constructing two elk-proof fences to protect 8 acres of big game winter range that supports rare western Oregon stands of quaking aspen.
OHA is the state’s largest pro-hunting organization, with more than 10,000 members and 25 chapters statewide. Its mission is “to provide abundant huntable wildlife resources in Oregon for present and future generations, enhancement of wildlife habitat and protection of hunters rights.”
