Library unit continuing

Proudly wearing Josephine Community Libraries Inc. (JCLI) T-shirts, several supporters attended the Josephine County Budget Committee meeting on Tuesday, May 6, to convince members to honor the county commitment to provide $300,000 in matching funds for opening libraries in Josephine County.
Bill Peterson, a JCLI director, emphasized that the group had only just received its 501(c)(3) status and begun accepting donations in its own name. And yet, he added, even before the official membership drive it had more than $80,000 in cash and $120,000 in cash pledges and in-kind services.

Although the Budget Committee voted to provide a reduced amount of $100,000 in matching funds, Peterson said that the group is far from defeated.
The Budget Committee took the $200,000 and contingency funds of $700,000 to supplement public safety operations during the fiscal year that will begin July 1.

“This doesn’t change our mission,” Peterson explained. “We will open the doors of the library to return this vital asset to our community. Josephine County government has made a commitment to the community that needs to be honored, and its action today does not live up to that commitment.”
