SPEAKING VOLUMES - Josephine Community Libraries Inc. (JCLI) now has 501(c)(3) status as a nonprofit organization, and can begin fund-raising and a membership drive. The next step toward transferring the facilities and collection from Jo County to JCLI is the inventory. Those who would like to help with the inventory can contact project coordinator Kris Gleisner at kpbiz@charter.net. Further updates will be available Wednesday, May 7 during a meeting of I.V. Friends of the Library at 4:30 p.m. in the I.V. Senior Center library on E. River Street.
RIDIN’ REQUEST - Volunteer workers are sought for a workday Saturday, May 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Glass Rail Outfit to help with site preparation for a therapeutic riding program at 27742 Redwood Hwy. Snacks and lunch will be provided. Phone 592-4658 for directions or more info.
BLAZING NEWS - Information about the reasoning for a levy that would result in 24/7 staffed responses for fire & rescue and medical emergencies will be among features during a community open house at Station 1 in Cave Junction. The event on Saturday, May 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. will demonstrate what it would be like to have a full, paid staff on 24-hour duty. The Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD) gathering for children and adults will include homemade refreshments, continuous video of emergency responses, and a presentation by Chief Harry Rich. Staff and equipment will be available, depending on alarms. The open house is part of efforts to inform the valley about Measure 17.20 in the May 20 election, the IVFD request for a local option levy. For more information phone Linda Butler at 592-6107.
WOW! TIMES TWO - Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance will present a free “Dancercise” program on Tuesday, May 13 beginning at 6 p.m. as part of its WOW! (Women Of Worth) program for women and children. Snacks and beverages will be served. Child-care and transportation assistance are available. Phone 592-2515 to arrange and reserve a spot for the 13th. On Thursday, May 15 the WOW! program will be “Can It End Here?” about how to help our children. POLICE MEMORIAL - A Police Memorial Week observance will be held Tuesday, May 13 on the front lawn of the Josephine County Courthouse in GP. The ceremony will include raising the U.S. flag to half-staff and a 21-gun salute in honor of six officers from Josephine County who have died in the line of duty. Participating in the ceremony will be law enforcement officers from Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, Grants Pass Dept. of Public Safety, Oregon State Police, U.S. Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management/Oregon. Police Memorial Week is to be observed from Sunday through Saturday, May 11 through 17.
MOUNTAINTOP MIXER - Oregon Caves Chateau will host a mixer for the Illinois Valley and Grants Pass chambers of commerce on Friday, May 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be refreshments, with wine provided by Bridgeview Vineyards Winery, and Foris Vineyards. Dinner will be available from 6 to 8:30 p.m.; lodging will be available at a 20 percent discount. Phone 592-3400 for reservations.
HEALTH WEALTH - “Your Oregon, Your Health” is the theme for a free public input and discussion gathering Thursday, May 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Medford. The location is to be Jackson County Library Services at 205 S. Central Ave. Interpreters and child-care will be available. Oregon leaders, it is said, are developing a proposal for quality, affordable health care for Oregonians. Input is sought to help shape the plan. Views also can be shared at talkhealthreform.org. The session is sponsored by the Oregon Health Fund Board.

A Lake Selmac Resort mixer for Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce set for Friday, May 2, was postponed due to weather concerns. A new date will be announced … Scout-O-Rama will be held Saturday, May 10 at Riverside Park in GP from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The theme is “It’s All About the Fun in Scouting” ... A yard sale to raise funds for sending History Day winners from Lorna Byrne Middle School to national competition in Washington, D.C. is set for Saturday, May 17.
