Media will abound for Art Walk Friday, May 9 in CJ

The May 9 Second Friday Art Walk in Downtown Cave Junction will kick off Mother’s Day Weekend with family fun for everyone from 5 to 8 p.m.

The Josephine County Bldg. will become KidSpace between 4:30 and 7 p.m. with Illinois Valley Boys and Girls Club hosting a “Make Your Own Mother’s Day Card” activity in the hallway. In front of the building, cotton candy will be provided courtesy of The Glass Rail Outfit, which is sponsoring a “Name Our Rustic Campground” contest.

Biscuit, a miniature donkey, will be available for photographs. Also, Lorna Byrne Middle School students will have raffle tickets to help raise funds for a trip to Washington, D.C. for national History Day competition.

At 7:30, radio host and author Jeff Golden will read from his newest book, Unafraid, in the county building meeting room. This unusual “Novel of the Possible” offers special meaning for those who remember the assassination of President Kennedy. Golden hosted Jefferson Public Radio’s talk show, “The Jefferson Exchange,” from 1998 to 2007.

Across the street, Special Productions will celebrate its third anniversary with refreshments, gift certificate drawings and free samples of nationally renowned Rose’s Handmade Fudge.

Art Walk welcomes Tropical Island Tans hosting Boys & Girls Club student watercolors. Next door, Nacho Mama’s will present Nacho Gramma’s Fabric Art and a free drawing for a handmade quilt at 8. A full menu and bar will be available until 10.

Another 8 o’clock free drawing will be at Illinois Valley Senior Thrift Shop for two “His ‘n’ Hers” watch sets. Crystal Schroeter-Winkelman will return from the coast for a special showing of her mosaic altar pieces.

Peace of Mind Wellness Center will be open for informational tours above Bagel Junction. Use the stairs at the rear of the building.

Western Plaza Roundup

Curves will host a Members’ Quilt Show & Sale with a free drawing at 8 for a one-month membership.

Back Street Salon will offer complimentary hand massages, and there will be a gift package raffle with the drawing at 8.

Demonstrations Set

Lou Levison will answer questions between 4 and 7 p.m. as he puts finishing touches on a fantasy mural featuring a dragon, a castle and a pirate ship in the SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) Room, on the west side of Evergreen Elementary School, 520 W. River St.

START is a program in search of volunteers and donations. Phone 592-3383 for further information.

More dragons and wizards will be in evidence at Amazon Queen, as Donnelle Kemmer will demonstrate polymer clay sculptures.

Embroidered Adaptations will host Cilicia Philemon, who handcrafts glass bead jewelry.

Music

Smoky & Katrina will help celebrate the grand opening of Ravenswood Gallery featuring Foris Vineyard wine-tasting and a local musician jam session.

Illinois Valley Visitor Center will feature I.V String Band between 5 and 7. Also, Connie Blakely will display white slab-built, hand-painted decorative earthenware.

She invites children of all ages to come in and paint a free clay medallion.

Taylor’s Country Store will host One-Man Band sensation Dave Flick, and Dreamweaver Christine Murphy, who will show Nature and scenic photography. Taylor’s menu will feature Chicken or Shrimp Alfredo.

Changes Art Gallery will welcome Sara Austin playing acoustic guitar and singing to help earn her way to the S.F. Conservatory for training this summer. Ever-popular Scott A. Carey will display his latest metal character creations.

The Community Media & Education Center will hold an open house with a drumming circle led by Jill Talise.

‘Business Hours Only’
Exhibits During May

The Eye Care Group on Caves Hwy. features Gabrielle Hampton’s opal jewelry, as well as raw opals from Hampton’s Rock Shop in Kerby.

Home Valley Bank is hosting painter Patricia Heller’s watercolors and oil paintings. The bank will be open until 6 on Art Walk night.

Second Friday Art Walk is sponsored by Illinois River Valley Arts Council (592-4444) with support from Evergreen Federal Bank, Cabin Chemistry, Home Valley Bank, and Jefferson State Financial Group. On Friday the IRVAC information table near Taylor’s will have raffle tickets for a Seven Feathers Resort getaway. The drawing will be held during Blackberry Festival weekend Aug. 9 and 10.
