The Oregon Little Big Band is best known for the jazzy music of Diana Krall, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Thelonius Monk and Etta James. Sometimes the band tosses in Latin rhythms of Antonio Carlos Joabim and Sergio Mendes to spice up the performance. However, they are decidedly eclectic musicians who may slip in to any performance some Pop or light classical music.

A Set of Jazz is the concert theme for LBMS. After the performance, students may ask questions and learn how Jazz improvisation works. Examples of scat singing and soloing also will be demonstrated.

Wallace comments, “Jazz improvisation, once learned, can be a fun and exciting form of self expression.”

He added that 10:20 in the morning is early in the day for Jazz musicians, but that they relish this chance to work with students. LBMS students will enjoy the rare opportunity to experience and learn firsthand about Jazz during this workshop. The program was arranged with the help of the Illinois River Valley Arts Council and LBMS Principal Damian Crowson.
