Tall ships to be at Crescent City Harbor
From our weekly issue dated April 23, 2008
The tall ships, Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, are sailing into Crescent City Harbor to participate in the second annual Tall-Master Ships celebration.
The event, a seven-day celebration of tall-masted ships and the region’s rich maritime history, will be held from Wednesday, April 23 through Tuesday, April 29.
This year’s event has been officially named America’s Wild Rivers Coast Tall-Masted Ships Celebration. History links span from Port Orford to Klamath. In the 19th century, the Wild Rivers coast was the home of various Native American tribes.

Gold was discovered along the beaches and in dense forests; lighthouses were built for mariners along the treacherous shores such as Battery Point Lighthouse, Cape Blanco, and the newest lighthouse, Port Brookings, which lit its light in 1999. This year the entire region’s history will be celebrated.
While in port, the ships will conduct a series of educational and public tours, as well as educational and public sailings, adventure cruises, and battle sails. Concurrent with the ships presence in Crescent City Harbor, the celebration will include a Harbor Fair (Friday through Sunday, April 25 to 27) including arts, crafts, and food vendors.
The Cultural Pavilion will provide a harborside location during the Harbor Fair for presentations and displays by regional ethnic and cultural organizations. The pavilion cultural stage will feature free musical and cultural performances throughout the event.

There also will be a Harbor Chamber Mixer catered by the chefs of the Bar O Boys Ranch, a visit from award-winning Western swing dancer Danny King, and a group lesson for attendees. With the Chowder Cook-Off, competitors can earn the title of “Best Chowder in the America’s Wild Rivers Coast.”
The harbor horizon will be illuminated by the visiting ships and local vessels as they light up the night sky as maritime history is celebrated.
