Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Arnold

Longtime O’Brien resident Elizabeth “Betty” Arnold, 87, died at her home Saturday, April 12, 2008.

Visitation was held Friday, April 18 at Illinois Valley Funeral Directors chapel in Cave Junction. The rosary was recited the same day at the chapel.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday, April 19 at St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church in Cave Junction with Father Peter O’Brien officiating. A committal service was conducted Monday, April 21 at Eagle Point National Cemetery.

Mrs. Arnold was born Elizabeth Hickey on Oct. 26, 1930 in Marianna, Ark. to Marion Hays Hickey & Jennie Lou Underwood Hickey. She spent her childhood there with her parents and two brothers, Hays and Bill, in the small town of Marvel, Ark. After high school, she settled in Southern California where she attended a business college.

When World War II broke out, Mrs. Arnold joined the U.S. Navy and became a yeoman in the WAVES. She was stationed in San Francisco, where she met a young U.S. Marine from Indiana named John Richard “Dick” Arnold, who was stationed at the supply depot on Treasure Island. After the war, they moved to Glendale and were married. They bought a brand-new home in what had been a tomato field in the town of Reseda in the San Fernando Valley, part of Los Angeles. There they raised three children.

In-between raising the children, she often worked as a legal secretary. After retiring, the couple traveled the country for two years. In 1979, they visited friends Mac & Barb McDonald in O’Brien and fell in love with the place. The Arnolds bought an extra parcel of land that the McDonalds owned, and developed it into the home they loved, and where they would spend the rest of their days.

Throughout her life Mrs. Arnold found ways to be involved in causes and organizations important to her and the community. She especially believed in the importance of voting, and often volunteered her home as a polling place. She was a devoted Democrat; proud to have been present at the 1960 convention that nominated John F. Kennedy.

In Oregon, she continued her involvement in the community by becoming a member of the O’Brien Women’s Circle. She was on the Budget Committee and later served as a director on the Illinois Valley Fire District Board. An ardent supporter of Lovejoy Hospice, she served on its board as well.

Mrs. Arnold attended a number of churches during the years, including the Episcopal and Methodist, and in 2006 converted to Catholicism. She was a member of Eastern Star for 10 years and a square dancing club for three years, both in California.

She loved to play cards and was included in many groups that played Bridge and Bunco. She had a lifelong passion for gardening and always grew vegetables and ornamental plants, and was a pet lover. In fact, she established her first garden at the O’Brien home before her house was even on the property.

Surviving are three children, Christopher Hays Arnold, and Alison Lee Arnold, both of O’Brien, and John Richard Arnold Jr., of Glendale, Calif.; and a brother, Bill Hickey, of San Antonio, Texas; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Hays; and her husband, Dick (in 1988).

Illinois Valley Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
