Span fixed at McCaleb

From our weekly issue dated April 23, 2008

On Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19, a work crew of community volunteers improved a low-water bridge on the road to McCaleb Ranch from Illinois River Road out of Selma.

The low-water bridge spans Illinois River providing passage for vehicle traffic to McCaleb Ranch, as well as access to a popular swimming and scuba diving spot.

McCaleb Ranch property is privately owned by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The U.S. Forest Service maintains the bridge. Work on the bridge was a joint venture and partnership between the forest service and BSA.

Improvements on the vehicle bridge included replacement of 14 bridge bumpers. They are mounted to the bridge on the sides and assist vehicles in maintaining a safe travel path.

Each bumper is 6 inches tall, 12 inches wide and 20 feet long.

“The bridge is much safer because of volunteers installing the bumpers,” said John Krawczyk of the Crater Lake Council Property Committee and a Boy Scout leader.  “This  volunteer project re-establishes a full bumper system on each side of the bridge,” he said.

The 2002 Biscuit Fire significantly damaged the McCaleb Ranch property.

“We are in the process of rebuilding the camp after the Biscuit Fire,” said Krawczyk.

“The Crater Lake Council of BSA has been improving the site over the years with goals for the boys to be able to camp up there and use the property again,” he said.
