GARDENING EXTRAVAGANZA - The annual free Spring Garden Fair, presented by OSU Extension Josephine County Master Gardeners, will be held the weekend of April 26 and 27 at the county fairgrounds in Grants Pass. Attractions will include a plant sale, arts and crafts, hourly raffles, more than 60 gardening-related vendors, and pH soil testing, plus a kids booth. Besides free admission, there will be no charge for parking. See the ad on this page.

GLASS RAIL DAY - Volunteers are needed for a workday Saturday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Glass Rail Outfit, 27742 Redwood Hwy. Site preparation for the coming therapeutic riding program will be conducted. Snacks and lunch will be provided. Participants should bring hats, gloves, long pants and poison ivy protection; plus pruners, hammers, shovels and other such items. Phone 592-4658 for more information and details.

MARTYRS PROGRAM - David Witt, of “the voice of the martyrs,” (VOM) will speak Sunday, April 27 during an All-Congregations Evening Service. The program, beginning at 6, will be held at Valley Evangelical Free Church in Cave Junction. VOM is described as a nonprofit, interdenominational organization with a vision for aiding Christians worldwide being persecuted for their faith in Christ. For details, see the ad in this issue.

QUERY CANDIDATES - Questions for candidates seeking two seats on the Josephine County Board of Commissioners in the May 20 primary election are to be submitted in advance for a public forum. It is set for Monday, April 28 beginning at 6:30 p.m. The forum in the Josephine County Bldg. in Cave Junction is co-sponsored by Illinois Valley News, I.V. Chamber of Commerce, and Social Justice Alliance. Questions can be brought to the News or chamber offices, or e-mailed to letters@illinois-valley-news.com.

YCC LABOR - Oregon Caves National Monument has two positions open in the Youth Conservation Corps for those 15 through 18 years old. The jobs will run from June 16 to Aug. 9. Phone Pat Fine at 592-2100 for an application.

STOMP CANCER - The May 31-June 1 weekend is set for the annual American Cancer Society fund-raiser on the Grants Pass High School track. Cave Junction resident Susan Hatch is a team captain. HOLIDAY HORSES - Christmas For Kids SDC, a nonprofit organization in Southern Douglas County that is extending its efforts to Josephine County, will conduct a trail ride benefit at Lake Selmac. The family event is open to all ages, and set for July 12, with a signup deadline of June 27. Only 50 riders will be allowed. Selma resident Dan Jordan will provide reduced-price hay rides. The event will include prizes and games, and available for sale will be items including food, toys and T-shirts. Christmas For Kids SDC said that it provides clothing and toys at Christmas for children in need, with Santa making the deliveries to homes.
