Commissioner Raffenburg seeking Courier retraction
From our weekly issue dated April 16, 2008
Josephine County Commissioner Jim Raffenburg has obtained legal counsel and asked that the Grants Pass Daily Courier newspaper print a retraction of a story the paper ran March 22 or face a libel lawsuit.
The article in question, headed “Who is Jim Raffenburg?” by Courier writer Stacy Stumbo, questioned his background and experience. Raffenburg has issued a refutation of those allegations, which he said the Courier refuses to publish.
Raffenburg’s attorney, Eugene lawyer David C. Force, said that the newspaper received notice on April 9, and has 14 days, until Wednesday, April 23, to print a retraction, “but it’s possible there will be a lawsuit.
“There’s certainly good evidence of malicious intent,” Force said. “ It’s clear to us that they have an agenda.”
