Selma resident Dan Jordan and his enormous Belgian horses, Rex and Red, won the Draft Horse Pull Saturday, April 12 at Josephine County Fairgrounds.

They pulled a record 11,000 pounds and scored highest overall. Randy Dodge of Albany, Ore., took second with his Belgian team, Astro and Aerb.

The crowd roared when Team Jordan and Team Dodge each pulled the sled holding 11,000 pounds of concrete blocks. It was a first in Oregon competition.

Jordan was busy during the afternoon driving three different teams. It was the first draft pull for two teams. One team was owned by Bob Reed, of Selma. His Belgians, Rocky and Kahuna, surprised Reed by pulling approximately 5,000 pounds, more than twice their weight.

The other team was a pair of red Suffolk draft horses, which competed in the Light-weight Division. They also performed well for their first competition.

Other Oregon competitors included Bob McGowan, of Lebanon; Jerry Lee and his son, Jerry Lee Jr., and Cliff Bartyzal, of Gold Hill. Nine teams competed with Belgian, Percheron and Suffolk horses.

After the final winning pull, Jordan drove Rex and Red to pull 11,500 pounds as a demonstration of their strength and his skill.

The audience responded with applause and yells of appreciation. A cash prize and heavy leather halters bearing brass nameplates were awarded to Jordan and Dodge.
