Gravel hearing continued
From our weekly issue dated April 9, 2008
A hearing to consider placing part of an Illinois Valley farm property onto a list of significant aggregate resources has been continued until this week.
The meeting before the Josephine County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday, April 2, was to determine whether a Holland Loop Road property, Illinois River Ranch, should be listed as a significant aggregate resource.
The applicants are Illinois Valley Ranch LLC and its representative, Barlow Sand & Gravel.

Hugo resident Holger Sommer objected to the jurisdiction of the board to hear the matter. He stated that the application under consideration contained new material not seen by the planning commission. His objection was taken into consideration, but the hearing continued.
Among those who spoke in favor was developer John Chmelir, of Grants Pass, who urged the commissioners to add the site to the resource list. He cited an increased need for rock and aggregate in Josephine County.

Illinois Valley resident Ken Stern spoke in opposition. He made the case that estimates of soil types on the property in question were skewed because a portion of a neighboring, county-owned parcel, which is predominately river wash, was included in the analysis.
The commissioners were to resume the hearing Wednesday morning, April 9.
