Tucked deep in a corner of Western Plaza in north Cave Junction, The Back Street Salon has opened its doors.

The salon features hair styling, facials, waxing and nail care and manicures. A tanning facility will be available soon.

The salon has come together with astonishing ease, said Kris Ismaili. She and partners Patty Floate and daughter-in-law Renee Pendleton said that they were “thrown together by fate,” and decided it was time to go into business on their own. Although this is their first stab at owning a business like this, Ismaili describes the process as having been quite painless.

“Doors opened for us, there were no obstacles,” Ismaili said, but a lot of hard work went into renovating the former medical office. The space was well suited to accommodate the salon’s electrical and plumbing needs, but cosmetically it needed help, the partners said.

From removing flaking wallpaper murals and painting, to pulling out old carpeting and laying a new floor, everything was done locally or with help from family. Other people within the salon community were supportive and donated fixtures for their new endeavor, Floate said.

Ismaili knows that flexibility will be key when it comes to accommodating the schedules of busy people. Back Street Salon will extend its hours, and a walk-in special on Mondays featuring $5 haircuts and manicures.

“This is an easy-going place,” she said, “where kids are welcome. It feels way good!”

Back Street Salon also features the NRG Works Foot Spa, a detoxifying machine that uses electrically charged water to help remove toxins from the body through the feet.

“We’ll have local jewelry artists place some consignment items here,” said Ismaili. “We’re going to try to do Art Walk and so is Curves and a few other businesses nearby.”

Back Street Salon is generally open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Phone 592-4277 for more information.
