Fire chief pact OK’d; Rich offers to return $10k to district

From our weekly issue dated March 19, 2008

A one-year contract keeping his salary at its current $69,000 has been approved 4-0 for Chief Harry Rich of Illinois Valley Fire District (IVFD) by district directors.

Additionally, Rich volunteered to return $10,000 of his salary to the district because of its somewhat bleak financial situation. Due to property taxes not being paid to the county, there is a budget shortage.

The chief told the board that he will return part of his pay to help, should the budget gap continue.

Resuming the regular session, directors approved the new contract. For his annual review, the chief received a total point score of 279.4, which equates to Outstanding Performance. Directors individually rated Rich’s performance.

Based on the performance reviews, only one director indicated some problems with the chief. Rich said that he would meet individually with that person to iron out those issues.

The board was addressed in regular session by Jeff Griffin, of Wilson-Heirgood, the IVFD insurance carrier out of Portland. During his 22-minute talk, Griffin touched on a wide range of matters affecting the district.

He had “all good things” to say about the district.
