O’Brien Firefighter Phil Aria -- selected as Firefighter of the Year for 2007 -- was among honorees during the annual awards banquet held by Illinois Valley Fire District.
The gathering, to recognize IVFD volunteer firefighters and volunteer support members, was held at I.V. Senior Center Saturday night, March 8. It was attended by a large crowd. Guests included a four-person squad of call-takers/dispatchers from the 911 Dispatch Center, all five IVFD directors, Cave Junction Mayor Tony Paulson, Dr. Marty Hill (the medical adviser for the district), Deputy Fire Marshal Charlie Chase, and Josephine County Sheriff Gil Gilbertson.

Besides Aria, a 10-year volunteer chosen for his dedication and overall devotion to duty, top awards for volunteers went to:
*Selma Station 2 Battalion Chief Ken Gavlik - Officer of the Year.
*Dick Miller, of O’Brien Station 3 - Support Person of the Year.

*Fire Station 2/Selma - Station Award (based on factors including training attendance and responses.)
*Lt. Kamron Ismaili, of Takilma Station 6 - Training Award (based on attendance and participation).
*Dick Miller, of O’Brien Station 3 - Maintenance Award (based on taking care of equipment.)
*Joe & Anngalyn Brown - recognition for organizing the annual golf tournament.
Also honored were past officers of the I.V. Volunteer Firefighters Association: President Gerry Bornstadt; Kathy Ethier, past and current treasurer; and Lynn Kaufman, past and current secretary. Dale Sandberg is the new association president.
Special appreciation was expressed to Kathy Jones for the mural that she painted.
