It’s time to sign-up for spring flag football and volleyball at Evergreen Elementary School, according to Scott Thornhill, director of the Illinois Valley Section of Boys & Girls Club.
The cost for this afterschool program is $40 for active members or $50 for nonmembers. Registration will be held through Friday, March 14 between 2 and 6:30 p.m. in the Evergreen cafeteria. A $10 late fee is added after March 20.
Volunteer coaches and team sponsors are needed. A meeting of football coaches will be held Thursday, April 3 at the Grants Pass Boys & Girls Club. Practice will begin April 7, with games starting April 19.

The meeting for volleyball coaches will be held Wednesday, April 2 in Grants Pass. Practice will start April 7; games will begin April 21.
All students are welcome to join the teams, which are popular sources of fun and fitness in the club’s after-school programs.
Thornhill said that approximately 50 students participate in the football and volleyball programs, which are open to boys and girls. Generally, more boys tend to play flag football, and the girls volleyball, but that is not an ironclad rule.
The point is to have fun, compete, have exciting games and do your best in these programs, he said.

Thornhill provided a brief history of the club’s valley section during a recent I.V. Chamber of Commerce meeting. The section was established in 1995, and Thornhill has been with the club since that time.
Noting the rumor of a possible closure of the valley program, he said that $111,000 is needed to keep it operating. The I.V. operation is required to raise half, or nearly $60,000. So far $33,000 has been raised; leaving a need for some $27,000.
Many valley businesses that hire locally are concerned about retaining the program. Many working parents cannot afford child-care, and depend on the Boys & Girls Club for after-school attention.
It was stated that planned fund-raisers, such as Taste of the Rogue, have not provided enough funds for the valley club.
