An attempt to steal building material from a rural Cave Junction residence was spoiled by Josephine County Sheriff Office (JCSO) deputies late last week.

Deputies Andrew Aguinaga and Ed Vincent, arrived at the Crickett Lane property just after 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17 to investigate an earlier reported burglary. The officers apparently interrupted the work of a would-be thief who was loading granite slabs into a light-colored Toyota pickup truck.

When the suspect took to his vehicle to flee, one officer who had advanced on foot toward the suspect reported that he was nearly struck as the vehicle backed up. Unable to go around the deputies’ vehicle, the driver left the roadway, attempting to escape downhill through a stand of trees. The pickup truck became stuck on a neighboring property after striking a tree head-on. The suspect fled on foot.

Several officers converged on the scene within a short time, including a JCSO K-9 and BLM law enforcement unit.

The suspect was not apprehended, but evidence was collected from the vehicle, which was impounded.

Vincent stated that the suspect seemed determined to avoid apprehension. Vincent characterized the driver’s behavior to that end as “suicidally reckless.”

A report of first-degree burglary, first-degree theft and first-degree criminal mischief was to follow.
