Reducing emmisions from cars state goal

From our weekly issue dated December 26, 2007

Using a global warming theme, Gov. Kulongoski said that Oregon will continue pushing to strengthen rules to lessen greenhouse fuel emissions from motor vehicles.

The federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) last week declined a request by California for a waiver that would have allowed it to implement tougher regulations.

“The announcement by EPA is a statement from the federal government that it is not willing to do what is needed to combat global warming,” said Kulongoski. “Because of this position, we at the state level have no choice but to keep up the pressure by pushing forward on aggressive policies to combat climate change.

“We will be working closely with the State of California to challenge this decision in court. Additionally, there are a number of policies
that we can and will move forward on.

“These include implementation of those portions of the clean cars standards that do not require the EPA waiver, and implementation of the landmark renewable electricity and renewable
fuel standards that passed last session. They are important tools for reducing Oregon’s greenhouse gas emissions.

“I will also pursue legislation to establish fuel-content standards that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“Despite the EPA ruling,” said the governor, “I believe the states absolutely have the right to adopt higher standards to protect the health of their citizens and their economic well being.

“I remain committed to moving forward in the fight against global warming and climate change.”
