BIDDING BUDDIES - Fun and bargains, plus beer-and-wine tasting, are set for the 20th annual auction sponsored by Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce. It will be held Friday, Nov. 16 at Wild River Brewing & Pizza Co. in Cave Junction. Beverage tasting will begin at 6 p.m. Anna Swett, of Anna’s Attic, will serve as clerk for the auction starting at 7, offering the usual pleasant and amusing time with auctioneer Jim Frick, of Century 21 Harris & Taylor Real Estate. Illinois Valley and Grants Pass-area merchants and organizations donate items for the auction. There is no admission charge, and anyone can attend without obligation to bid. Beverages for tasting will be provided courtesy of Wild River, Foris Vineyards, and Bridgeview Vineyards Winery.

Those who have auction items can leave them at Northwest Hairlines, across from the CJ Post Office, or phone the chamber office at 592-3326.

COIN A PHRASE - Tuesday, Nov. 10 is the deadline to donate pennies and other coins to the Illinois Valley Christmas Basket Program. It serves more than 700 families each year, and helps put toys under Christmas trees for children. Said leaders, “Every year, all IVHS seniors help this program by filling food baskets and candy bags, and distributing toys. With high gasoline prices, and everything else it seems, we fear we will not have enough time or resources to serve our families and children. Every little bit helps. Bring all your pennies and other coins to Illinois Valley Christmas Basket Program at 535 E. River St. in Cave Junction Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.” For more information phone 592-4149, Ext. 223 or 225.

HOLIDAY DÉCOR CONTEST- The annual Christmas Decorating Contest again is sponsored by Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce. Indoor and outdoor decorations must be ready for judging on Friday, Dec. 14. Phone 592-3326 for more information.

FORGET TO REMEMBER? - Oregon State University (OSU) Extension offers a 90-minute presentation with practical tips and techniques to maintain, protect and improve aging memories. “Memory Difficulties: Should I Be Worried?” will be presented Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. at the OSU Extension Auditorium, 215 Ringuette St. in Grants Pass. The presenter will be Sharon Johnson, associate professor with Extension’s Family & Community Development Program, who uses humor and vivid illustration to introduce effective ways to manage memory difficulties and even improve memory ability in later years. Every attendee will be given a packet of information on how to optimize memory ability.
