The Learning Through Arts (LTA) program, sponsored by Illinois River Valley Arts Council, is expanding its outreach to include Evergreen Elementary School.
The first in-class activity was “a fascinating project” with Kathy Ryan’s first-graders.
The class has been learning how Native American medicine wheels, animal symbols, the seasons, and each child’s birthday interrelate. Classroom and LTA volunteers worked with the children to sew buttons and glue sequins on each child’s birthday season animal symbol.
Advertisment:
For most of the children, it was their first sewing experience and an opportunity to create something unique. Additionally, this kind of activity builds strong eye-hand coordination, “a vital skill that assists with future activities and adult life careers.”
The next project planned by LTA is the Latin American art workshop at Lorna Byrne Middle School scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 23 and 24. Those who want to volunteer can contact Patti Culver, LTA program administrator, at irvac.lta@gmail.com or phone 592-3803.
The Learning Through Art program, and the monthly Second Friday Art Walk are two main components of IRVAC’s mission of providing art education and art experiences to residents of Illinois Valley.
IRVAC encourages all who are interested “to join in the fun” by reading its Website at www.illinois-river-valley-arts-council.com or phone 592-5296.
