Anyone who’s been into a major department store lately is aware that it’s almost “that time of year again.”

But for the holiday period, this year is a bit different. With the recently opened Embroidered Adaptations store, valley residents and others are discovering that an embroidered item can be a wonderful gift that doesn’t break the bank.

Michael Miller and his wife, Lisa Beteta, have been working toward having a store since they originally began their embroidery business more than two years ago. They spent nearly three weeks of hard work remodeling the space that formerly housed Darn Near Everything at 136 S. Redwood Hwy. in Downtown Cave Junction.

Their store is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The work wasn’t even close to finished once the remodeling was complete. The couple went to work selecting wonderful items available for sale that can be embroidered, along with beautiful tea sets fit for the Queen of England.

From picnic and wine baskets to bathrobes, from hand towels to book bags, there are plenty of items available to get customers’ creative gift ideas flowing.

“We really want to encourage people to bring in something they may already have,” said Miller. “You don’t have to necessarily buy something from our retail section. Everyone has something that can be personalized.”

They’ve also brought in some Christmas items.
They include stockings that can be purchased and embroidered with the family pet’s name or a grandchild’s name along with other Christmas necessities.

Embroidered Adaptations is trying to get away from the common misconception that embroidery is just for bowling teams, and business hats and shirts. They offer business logos created in-house, and can use a picture or drawing to recreate just about anything that customers would like to see embroidered.

Miller uses a state-of-the-art Brother single-head, nine-needle computerized embroidery machine. He programs where to place stitches, what direction to move, how tight or loose the stitches should be, what areas should be sewn first, when to switch colors and how to shadow.

Digitizing a logo is something that most embroidery shops outsource, and because of this it will usually cost customers nearly three times what Embroidered Adaptations charges for the same service, Miller said. He feels that the service should be kept to a reasonable fee because he doesn’t have to outsource and can do all the work himself.

Why Cave Junction? The Millers wanted to keep the business in Illinois Valley instead of setting Grants Pass.

They love the valley and want to offer services that are more affordable than what’s available in Grants Pass and keep the money in the community.
