‘Ben’ Pence

Samuel “Ben” Pence, 73, a U.S. Navy veteran and appliance repairman, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007 at his home in Cave Junction.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. His ashes will be scattered at sea. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

Stephens Family Chapel of Grants Pass is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pence was born June 17, 1934 in Sinks Grove, W. Va. to Mark and Ona (Cochran) Pence. He lived in West Virginia and Indiana until 1951 when he joined the U.S. Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1957.

During his tour of duty,
he was a member of the underwater demolition team (UDT), served in the Korean War, and participated in two nuclear testing operations in the South Pacific. His cause of death was lymphoma caused by his exposure to radiation while there, the family said. 

On July 7, 1957, he married Linda Rae Dougherty, and they resided in Southern California until 1963, when they moved to Northern California. They settled in Susanville,
Calif. in 1966. In 1980, they moved to E. Contra Costa County in California, and in 1983 relocated to Yucca Valley, Calif. 

They moved to Cave Junction in 1993. He was a self-employed appliance and refrigeration repair man most of his life. He enjoyed “fixing things,” NASCAR, fishing, his family and life.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Linda, a daughter, Kimberly Ritola, of Etna, Calif.; a son, Mark Pence, of
Fort Jones, Calif.; a foster son, Robert Wilkinson, of Simpsonville, S.C.; a sister, Beatrice Jordan, of Webster Springs, W.
Va.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

His sister, Emily Monsma, died in 1983.

Loretta E. Herr

A funeral service for O’Brien resident Loretta Emma Herr, 94, who died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007 at a nursing home in Grants Pass, will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17.

The service will be held at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Cave Junction with Pastor Vern Hyland officiating. Interment will follow at Laurel Cemetery. Illinois Valley Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Herr was born on Aug. 28, 1913 in Toledo, Ohio to John & Flora (Long) Scherer. On Dec. 31, 1931 she married Ralph L. Herr. She moved from Michigan to O’Brien 14 years ago.

She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church for 70 years; most recently 14 years with the congregation in Cave Junction. While living in Toledo, she hosted parties for the youth in the church.

Mrs. Herr enjoyed crafts for children at school and supplied the materials and her time for an entire classroom. She also enjoyed playing the organ, singing in the choir, singing solos, and sewing.

Her family said that she was always generous to those in need. She would give a $20 bill or a $100 check to individuals or young families needing help, the family said.

Survivors are a son, Don Herr, of O’Brien; a daughter, Barbara Bundy, of Norco, Calif.; a sister, Annetta Salisbury, of Arkansas; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband in November 2000; and two brothers, Arnold Scherer and Roger Scherer.

‘Wink’ Nanasy

William “Wink” R. Nanasy, 54, of Selma, died Oct. 4, 2007 at Three
Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass.

A service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Stephens Family Chapel of Grant s Pass.

Mr. Nanasy was born on June 15, 1953 in San Francisco to William and Mary Nanasy. He was raised in Hawaii, then lived and worked in Morro Bay, Calif. before moving to Seattle, He relocated to Selma in 1994.

He had worked for United Airlines, Microsoft Corp. and in the fishing industry. “Wink” enjoyed golf and fishing.

Surviving are his mother, Mary Frances Nanasy; a brother, Joseph Nanasy; a sister, Susan Nanasy Castle; a nephew; and numerous cousins.

Gladys Amos

Gladys Amos, 81, of Grants Pass, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007 in Grants Pass.

A graveside service was held Sunday, Oct. 14, at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens in Grants Pass. Remembrances may be made to Lovejoy Hospice, 939 S.E. Eighth St., Grants Pass OR 97526.

Mrs. Amos was born on March 14, 1926 in Dover, Ark. to Sheridan & Fannie (Stephenson) Freeman. She was raised in Arkansas until she was 12 when her family moved to Idaho. She graduated from Plymouth High School in New Plymouth, Idaho in 1944. After graduating, she married Carl Amos.

In 1953, with her husband and three children, she moved to Anderson, Calif. For 33 years, she owned and operated a real estate investment business. In 2004 she moved from Anderson to Grants Pass.

She especially enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, and investing.

Surviving are three daughters, Lynda Martin, of Grants Pass, Sherry Ephland, of Crescent City, Calif., and Lois Amos of Redding, Calif.; three grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

Her husband died in 1995.
