WITCHES & FAIRIES - A free presentation, “The Witch’s Garden: The Hidden Meaning of Fairy Tales,” will be given Saturday, Oct. 20 (an incorrect date was in the last issue). The Oregon Chautauqua program will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Illinois Valley Senior Center, and be hosted by I.V. Friends of the Library. Folklorist Curtis Yehnert will give the public talk. Those who want to wear fairy tale attire are welcome to do so. Oregon Chautauqua programs are offered through the Oregon Council for the Humanities.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS - October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance (IVSHA) notes that each year 18 people die in Oregon as a result of domestic violence. It added, “These victims include men, women and children. Domestic violence affects us all. Whether you are a survivor, family member, friend or co-worker; you can make a difference. Get involved. For more information on how to help phone 592-2515.”
IVSHA also announced that it will sponsor a Fireside Vigil Friday, Oct. 26 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Illinois Valley Resource Center, 535 E. River St. in Cave Junction. There will be music, refreshments and a time of sharing.
HOSPICE HAPPENING - The Oregon Hospice Association (OHA) will present its 2007 Professional Practices Exchange at Lovejoy Hospice in Grants Pass on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 18 and 19. Attracting up to 100 visitors from around the world, the conference goal is to generate new ideas and productive feelings and energize participants through the experience.
YULE BASKET PLAN - Ever wanted to help a worthy cause, but felt that you couldn’t “afford” to help? Every year the Illinois Valley Christmas Basket Program serves more than 700 families, and helps put toys under Christmas trees for children. Said leaders, “Every year, all IVHS seniors help this program by filling food baskets and candy bags, and distributing toys. With high gasoline prices, and everything else it seems, we fear we will not have enough time or resources to serve our families and children. This year we are conducting a six-month coin drive that will end Nov. 20. Every little bit helps. Bring all your pennies and other coins to Illinois Valley Christmas Basket Program at 535 E.
