Rotary Intl. welcomes new valley chapter
I.V. Rotary Club President Karen Bodeving and District Governor Tim Bewley
Rotary Club of Illinois became an officially chartered club within Rotary International during a celebratory dinner meeting held Saturday night, Oct. 6 at the Chateau at Oregon Caves National Monument.
Wine was provided by Foris Vineyards. The event was attended by more than 100 persons.
Attending were several past district governors and Rotarians from throughout Oregon, as well as Karen Bodeving, president of Illinois Valley Rotary. She accepted the newly signed charter document from Tim Bewley, current governor of District 5110.
Bewley outlined the many community, humanitarian projects conducted by Rotary. He noted that the new club already is outstanding in many respects, including its charter membership roll and its weekly newsletter.
Cited by the new club’s membership and others for his tireless efforts to help establish the new organization, Nelson Maler from Grants Pass Rotary Club was awarded the designation of honorary charter member.
Maler and his wife, Elizabeth, also were recognized as Paul Harris Fellows for their contributions to the Rotary Foundation. Maler works at Smith Barney in Grants Pass.
Other notable attendees were John Billings, a past district governor who has achieved 61 years of perfect Rotary attendance. Billings led the meeting in singing “God Bless America.”
Visiting Rotarians brought banners, well wishes and gifts for the new club. Gifts included a new bell and inscribed gavel with which to open and close meetings.
Illinois Valley is the 69th club chartered in District 5110. The first club in the district was Roseburg, chartered in 1922.
I.V. Rotary meets Tuesdays at noon in the Junction Inn’s Boswell Room.
