Here, There & Everywhere

BE A DRIP - A blood donation drive will be held Thursday, Oct. 4 from 1 to 6 p.m. at Illinois Valley Senior Center by American Red Cross. Anyone at least 17 years old (not 12 as the errant editor wrote last week) can donate. Donors also must weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, as long as they’re in good health and haven’t donated during the previous eight weeks.

BARTER FAIRE AFFAIR - Friday, Oct. 5 through Sunday, Oct. 7 are set for the fifth annual Hope Mountain Barter Faire on Page Creek Road off Takilma Road, some 10 miles from Cave Junction. The Dome School fund-raiser has family camping available, and there will be bartering and trading as well as music, dance, workshops and a Kids Village. The event will open at 10 a.m. Friday, and close Sunday evening. Day passes and three-day camping passes are available. Children with adults are free. Youth younger than 18 must be with a parent or responsible adult. Food vendors must contact the Faire Committee. For more information or to find out about volunteer opportunities phone the hotline at 592-4458.

HOME VALLEY ‘SAFE’ - Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance and Home Valley Bank will hold an Illinois Valley Chamber of Commerce mixer on Friday, Oct. 5. The gathering is set for 5:30 to 7 p.m. There will be light refreshments, and a chance to meet and greet fellow chamber members. Plus, mixer-goers can check out the new safe house facility, as it will relocate to the bank building once the new Home Valley branch on Redwood Hwy. in Downtown Cave Junction is finished.

SELMA HAPPENING - A fall flea market and pancake breakfast will be held Saturday, Oct. 13 at Selma Center. The breakfast will run from 8:30 to 11 a.m.; the flea mart from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For booth information or other information phone 415-1000 or 597-2522.

SMART FOLKS SOUGHT - Evergreen Elementary School’s reading program SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) is looking for volunteers. They spend one hour a week reading to a child in kindergarten through third-grade Tuesdays or Wednesdays. No experience is necessary; “simply a desire to spend time reading to a great kid every week.” The Sept. 15 fund-raiser at Bridgeview Vineyards Winery raised $4,500; so there is now room for 15 new kids “and we need 15 new volunteers.” Times available: Wednesdays 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., noon to 1 p.m., and 1 to 2 p.m. Phone “Tina” at 592-3383 for Tuesday times as they’re almost filled. Or phone Evergreen Elementary at 592-3136. All volunteers pass a background check before reading. Applications are available at getsmartoregon.org or at the school.

JUNIOR SAVINGS NOTE - The Junior Savings Program & Education Trust appreciates the community for its recent fund-raiser. Raffle tickets for the Old Glory quilt brought in $661. The winner is Lorraine Safer, of Selma. “Les” & Pat Leseicki are the organizers and operators of the savings program for valley youngsters. They use Home Valley Bank, and the couple can be reached at 592-2999.

SPAY/NEUTER TOOTER - Each fall, kittens born in the spring begin having litters. That’s right -- a cat can begin breeding at 4-months, and that’s why three Jackson County animal welfare organizations and many veterinary offices in our region have joined to save lives this October by offering discounted spay/neuter certificates during the Tom and Mom campaign. Due to joint funding by SNYP, FOTAS, and JCACC, a cat spay or neuter is only $25. Certificates are available at Pet Country in Medford and Ashland Grange-Co-ops, and Medford and Grants Pass Mini-Pet Marts. Details are available by phoning 858-3325 or visit spayneuter.org. And there’s an ad in this issue (not last week’s issue, as the editor goofed).

CYCLE ANGELS - On Sunday, Sept. 9, The Rogue Valley Wings, a Grants Pass motorcycle chapter of Gold Wing Touring Association (GTWA), raised funds during its annual Poker Run to benefit Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance (IVSHA). Larry Balloy, chapter director, presented a donation of $500 to Susie Ellwood, IVSHA representative from Cave Junction. GWTA welcomes all bikes and is conducting a membership drive including one year free. For information phone 479-7815, 660-6517 or 582-1403.

NOTEPAD - All about gallows and other fun pastimes will be explored during a free, public Chautauqua program, “Justice In Frontier Oregon,” at Selma Center on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 1:30 p.m. Western attire is encouraged, but not mandatory … Youth wrestling signups will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 10 and 11 beginning at 6 p.m. in front of the wrestling room at IVHS. See the ad in this issue … I.V. Chamber of Commerce has changed its meetings to second Wednesdays at noon at Wild River Brewing & Pizza Co. (Next meeting under the new schedule is set for Oct. 10) ... Free ultrasound exams are offered to those between seven and 22 weeks into their pregnancy. Pregnancy Care Center of Grants Pass is offering the free service for nurse-training from Monday, Oct. 15 through Monday Oct. 22. Phone 479-6264 for an appointment … Actual headlines: *New autos to hit 5 million. *Defendant’s speech ends in long sentence. *Doctor testifies in horse suit. *Flaming toilet seat causes evacuation at high school.
