Public minivans on horizon

With the likelihood of receiving $40,845 in federal funds, purchasing minivans to reach rural homes that minibuses can’t reach is planned by Josephine County Public Transit (JCPT).

The money for the department, also known as Josephine Community Transit (JCT), is anticipated from the Federal Transit Administration, said Dawn Pike, JCPT transportation manager.

Josephine County commissioners have voted 3-0 on a resolution that will allow JCPT to acquire the funding, part of a 2005 authorization bill.

Pike said that the system operates 10 minibuses with seating capacities varying from 14 to 21 persons. But there are some outlying areas, such as in Illinois Valley, where narrow driveways preclude minibuses from traveling.

Therefore, Pike said that the plan is to purchase as many minivans as possible with the federal funds, including one with a wheelchair lift. This will enable JCPT to increase its service to the elderly and disabled, Pike said.

She is hopeful that at least three vans, with capacities of perhaps 10 to 12 passengers, can be acquired. The system currently employs the equivalent of 13 full-time drivers, but no new drivers will be added with the purchase of new vans, Pike said.

JCT “Express Connections” operate Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Offering inexpensive fares, minibuses provide service from Illinois Valley locations to the Grants Pass area. Phone 474-5452 for locations and schedules.
