Maxine Louise Peterson

Maxine Louise Peterson, 70, of Cave Junction died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass.

There will be a scattering of ashes in the Pacific Ocean at a later time. Condolences to the Peterson Family can be made at www.since1928Hull.com.

Mrs. Peterson was born at home to John and Phyllis Brett on Nov. 5, 1936 in Rhyl, North Wales. She weighed 2 pounds, 2 ounces. As a child she played hide-and-seek in the remains of old castles.

Growing up during World War II she lived in Wales and England. Her family hosted a young boy named Brian, who stayed with them away from his family in London, where Hitler was headed, as in the movie Narnia. She spent many nights in bomb shelters.

She studied piano and violin as a child. She joined the British Royal Air Force as a young adult. She married her first husband, a U.S. Army soldier, and came to the United States with him in 1957.

She had many more adventures in her life before settling in Grants Pass in 1973 to finish raising her three children. In Grants Pass she worked in nursing homes, even operating a foster care provider home at a later time. She eventually went back to school at Rogue Community College; then went to work for Adult & Family Services.

On Oct. 27, 1981 she married Donald Peterson, who had retired from NYPD, and who survives. They moved to Cave Junction around 1985.

She enjoyed being a housewife, a good cup of coffee, gardening, crossword puzzles, playing bingo, flying, reading, watching baseball games, golf, the BBC and harassing “Donald, Rambo” and her many kitties.

Besides her loving husband, she is survived by her daughter, Tina Lenhart, of Grants Pass; two sons, Russell Shrode and Gary Shrode; two step-children, Shawn Peterson and Dawn Marie Curran; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
