Charles William “Chuck” Jacobs, 77, of Selma, who was an artist, musician and master craftsman, died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007 at Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass.
A celebration of his life was held Friday, Aug. 24 at the family home in Selma.

“Chuck” was born on March 15, 1930, in Modesto, Calif. to Charles Henry Jacobs and Olive Ruth (Overstreet) Jacobs.
He served two years in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. He graduated from Life Bible College in Los Angeles in 1959, and received a Bachelor of Theology degree in 1962.
In 1971 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Azusa Pacific University, and in1972 he completed his Master of Arts degree. He taught marriage and family relations at Citrus College in Glendora, Calif., and worked as an eligibility worker for the Dept. of Public Social Services in Covina, Calif. It was there that he met his wife, Betsey.
After retirement, their love of Nature drew them from Claremont, Calif. to Selma, where they had lived happily since 1992.
Mr. Jacobs was a member of the Unitarian Fellowship of Grants Pass, and an active
member of the community. His family agrees that many were inspired by his passion for adventure and love of the arts.
He leaves behind his wife, Betsey Ross Jacobs, of Selma; his four children,
Lynell Miller, of Federal Way, Wash., Cynthia Englebright, of
Novato, Calif., Gary Jacobs, of La Mesa, Calif., and Jeanette Jacobs, of Sunnyvale,
Calif.; three step-children, Peggy Jackson, of Selma, Bill Thompson, of Helena, Mont., and Mark Thompson, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He also has two brothers, Jim Jacobs and Dick Jacobs, both of Modesto, Calif.
Michael Cady ‘Herky’ Cotton
Michael Cady “Herky” Cotton, 47, of Cave Junction, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2007 at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

“Herky” was born on Feb. 14, 1960 in Eureka, Calif. to Frederick Healy Cotton and Jacqueline Darlene Cotton. He attended the Oregon State School for the Deaf in Salem and later transferred to public schools in Murphy. He attended Lincoln Savage Middle School and Hidden Valley High School, where he participated in wrestling and football.
His family said that he had a big heart and always wanted to help people.
Surviving are a sister, Alisyn Carson, of Sparks, Nev.; two brothers, Jacque Cotton, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Andre Cotton, of Grants Pass; and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a devoted friend, Cherie Duran, of Cave Junction, and her family.
He was preceded in death by his father in 2005, and his mother in 2003.
Nate Barker
Nate Barker, 20, of Grants Pass, a former Selma resident and current member of the Army National Guard, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2007 as the result of an automobile accident in Kuna, Idaho.
A graveside service was held Monday, Aug. 27 at Wilderville Cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors was in charge of local arrangements.

He was born Nathaniel Wayne Barker on July 4, 1987 in Arcata, Calif. In 1992 he moved from Eureka, Calif. to Grants Pass, where he attended North Valley High School for his freshman year and part of his sophomore year. In 2002 as a sophomore he moved to Selma and attended Illinois Valley High School until graduating in 2005.
During 2004 during his junior year in high school he enlisted in the Oregon National Guard, in which he served in the 186th Infantry, 41st Battalion Delta Company, of Grants Pass. He served active duty in Afghanistan and received eight awards and medals: the National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, NATO Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.
Nate was still currently enlisted in the National Guard. His hobbies included dirt biking, “Jeeping,” camping, and snowboarding.
Survivors are his wife, Jessica Marie Lavassaur, of Grants Pass; his mother, Jessica Couris Cotta, of Selma; his stepfather, Manuel N. Cotta, of Selma; three brothers, Paul Couris, Brandon Cotta, and Padraic Cotta; and his grandparents, Manuel & Faith Cotta, Merrlyn Barker, and Dean & Joan Couris.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dan Barker; and his brother, Aaron Couris.
Bob Clark
Former Selma resident Bob Clark, 66, of Grants Pass, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007 at his home.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 30 at Hull & Hull Chapel in Grants Pass with Chaplain Frank Barrows conducting. Interment will follow at Granite Hill Cemetery in Grants Pass. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Clark was born Nov. 16, 1940 in San Diego to George and Ruby Clark. He graduated from high school in San Diego. On June 6, 1980 in San Diego he married Catherine Joan Carroll. For four years he worked as a custodian at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
He then worked as a custodian at San Jose State University California for 21 years, where he only missed four days of work and retired in July 1991. In 1993 he moved from San Jose to Selma, and in 2001 to Grants Pass.
He enjoyed cats, watching movies, and reading books about war. There are no known survivors.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Clark, on Aug.12, 1994.
