Carol Ann Compton

Carol Ann Compton, 66, of Cave Junction, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007 at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.

A memorial service will begin at noon, Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007 at First Baptist Church in Selma with Pastor Monty Pope officiating. Southern Oregon Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Compton was born on Nov. 12, 1940 in Los Angeles to Charles & Jackie Snow. She attended high school until the ninth grade. In 1957 she met Charles Compton, of Victorville, Calif., and they were married in Las Vegas, Nev. on June 29, 1957. In 1964 they moved to Cave Junction with their four children.

While he worked for Napa Auto Parts for 16 years, she raised the children and worked as a waitress at the former Hamburger Haven that was adjacent to what is now Lorna Byrne Middle School. While her children were in school, Mrs. Compton was involved in their school activities, and many youth from Illinois Valley High School knew her as “mom.” After her children were grown, she worked for what was then Pizza Deli (now Wild River Brewing & Pizza Co.) and later retired to take care of her husband, “Lefty.”

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Selma and a bowling league in Grants Pass. She volunteered at Evergreen Elementary School to help children learn to read, and from 1965 to 1981 volunteered at Illinois Valley High School.

Her hobbies included gardening, flower arranging, bowling, motorcycle rides, crafts and collecting sea shells.

Surviving are a daughter, Dianna Compton, of Springfield, Ore.; two sons, Mark Compton, of Cave Junction, and John Compton, of Brookings; her father, Charles E. Snow, of Washington state; her mother, Jackie Miller, of El Monte, Calif.; a sister, Jan Gilliam, of Cave Junction; two brothers, Herbie and John, both of El Monte; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Compton was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Louis Compton Sr., on Aug. 9, 2002; and her son, Charles Louis Compton Jr., on Feb. 14, 1998.

Charles E. Brouillette

Former Cave Junction resident, Charles Brouillette, 67, died Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at Albany Memorial Hospital in Colonie, N.Y. surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Aurora, Wis., he is the son of Roselyn Brouillette and the late Isadore Brouillette, former owners of Sportsman Tavern in Cave Junction.

Charles was a meat department manager for 27 years. He started the meat butchering trade as a high school student working for Tom and Lucille Owens, of the former Hammer’s Model Market in Cave Junction.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Spinosa Brouillette; four sons, William, James, Charles and Edward Brouillette; his daughter, Laura Roth; his mother, Roselyn Ball Brouillette, of Livermore, Calif.; and two sisters, Linda Evans, of Livermore, and Teresa La Fromboise, of Crystal, Minn.

The family has requested memorial contributions to the Community Hospice of Albany County, 445 New Karner Road, Albany N.Y. 12205.

Arrangements were directed by Applebee Funeral Home, of Delmar, N.Y.

Kenneth Edgar Garcelon

Former Illinois Valley resident Kenneth Edgar Garcelon, 86, of Fortuna, Calif., died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007 at Redwood Memorial Hospital.

Visitation was held Thursday, Aug. 16 at St. Patrick of the Forest Catholic Church in Cave Junction. A funeral service followed at the church with Father Harry Holwell officiating. Interment followed at Laurel Cemetery in Cave Junction. Illinois Valley Funeral Directors handled arrangements.

Mr. Garcelon was born on Dec. 23, 1920 in Snohomish, Wash. to Paul and Marie Garcelon. In 1941 he graduated from Fortuna High School. On April 18, 1944 in San Francisco, he married Peggy Kielty, who preceded him in death.

He attended flight school at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. He worked as a maintenance engineer for many years. He lived in Napa, Calif., and in 1986 moved to Cave Junction. In October 2006 he returned to Fortuna, where he had grown up.

He was a woodworker and enjoyed making and giving toys to children at Christmas.

Survivors are two sons, Gerald Garcelon, of Arlee, Mont., and David Garcelon, of McKinleyville, Calif.; two daughters, Gayle Peterson, of Redway, Calif., and Beverly Garcelon, of Big Fork, Mont.; a sister, Iris Hippert, of Grass Valley, Calif.; a brother, Eldon Garcelon, of Fort Worth, Texas; and three grandchildren.
