Greenhouse gas reduction aim of new bill
House Bill 3543,that establishes aggressive greenhouse gas emission reduction goals for the state, has been signed by Gov. Kulongoski.
The legislation follows recommendations by the Governor’s Advisory Group on Global Warming and is endorsed by the governor.
“Global warming is an issue that impacts all of us and requires immediate attention,” warned Kulongoski. This legislation “marks the next step in Oregon’s leadership on global warming by adopting some of the most aggressive greenhouse gas reduction goals in the nation.”

Under HB 3543, Oregon is charged with reducing emissions to 10 percent below 1990 levels by 2020 and 75 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. This legislation also creates a climate change resource center within the Oregon University System and establishes a permanent Global Warming Commission to replace the advisory groups that have been serving the governor for the last three years.
