Alice in Wonderland produced by Cave Junction residents

Most people would never expect to see a fish playing a bass guitar or a bird playing an accordion.

But a current stage adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s surreal classic, Alice in Wonderland, features all that and more.

The production, directed by Cave Junction residents Nedd and Jennifer Wynant, debuted on Friday, July 6 at One Eleven Evelyn Center for the Arts in Grants Pass.

Rehearsals began in May, and were very much a family effort. Nedd’s mother, brother and sisters helped with costumes, set design, lighting choreography and other important aspects of the show.

Added Jennifer, “Everything was made by our family.”

Emily Jane Madden, 9, stars as Alice, and begins the show with a violin solo. The set centers on Alice’s bedroom, which is complete with gigantic playing cards.

The 19-member cast also features Danielle Mrkvicka as the white rabbit, Matthew Lyke as the Mad Hatter, and Audie Elzea as the caterpillar.

Special emphasis was placed on costuming during initial stages of the production, said Jennifer, as well as the real-time soundtrack.

“We have live musicians, and the costumes are incredible,” she said. “Really what I love is the visual part of it all.”

Alice in Wonderland is running Fridays through Sundays during July, and will close on Sunday, July 29. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7 p.m., with Sunday shows at 2 p.m.

Tickets for general admission, senior citizens and students, and children 10 years and under are available at the door.

Advance tickets are available at Grants Pass Pharmacy, Service Drugs and the One Eleven Evelyn box office one hour before show time.

“We’re really looking for something that the whole family can enjoy,” said Jennifer.

Once the production wraps up, Jennifer said that the family plans to open Ivy Dance Studio at the former location of Hazel’s Nutrition Center on Caves Hwy. A fund-raiser for the facility will be scheduled in September, and Jennifer said that she hopes to have it open in the fall.

“It’s something we all want for the Illinois Valley to have,” she said.
