Here, There & Everywhere

WOMEN’S SUPPORT - Facilitated by Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance, a women’s domestic violence support group will begin meeting Friday, July 6 and continue on subsequent Fridays. The group, for which there is no fee, will meet from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is open “to all women who want to work on past trauma and domestic violence issues in a safe, nurturing environment.” To RSVP, contact Iris Loewen at 592-4147.

GOT LOCO POWER? - Illinois Valley Lions Club is looking for a riding lawnmower with a hydrostatic automatic transmission and at least 18 hp from which to build a locomotive as its popular Engine 97. The locomotive, used at numerous community events to provide free rides, was wrecked recently when it fell off its trailer. The rest of the train is OK. The club would like a “donation or a deal.” Phone Steve Lyons at 592-3181 (Century 21 Harris & Taylor).

IVHSA QUILT RAFFLE - Valley quilters, led by Barbara Ferguson and Carol Dickson, sewed an “Opportunity Quilt” to benefit the capital campaign for Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance (IVSHA). The quilt consists of blocks made to look like random houses, with everything from a barn, tee-pee and even a doghouse, surrounded by chickens, horses, dogs and flowers. The quilt is displayed at Picket Fence Fabrics at Caves Hwy. and S. Old Stage Road, and will be raffled Oct. 13 during an IVSHA-sponsored talk by Denise Brown, sister to the late Nicole Brown-Simpson, at Grants Pass Performing Arts Center. Raffle tickets are available at Picket Fence Fabrics, or by phoning Carol Dickson at 592-8521.

NO LYIN’/A LION - Valley resident Jacob Hertler and his family spent a scary night recently near Ferris Street along Illinois River, thanks to a noisy cougar. “It made that weird noise all night long, and I saw its shining eyes,” said Hertler. The “big cat” was not scared, being unfazed by barking dogs and Hertler yelling at it. He notified Oregon Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, as it was within 100 feet of a home and circling.

ADVERTISING GONE MAD - A new supermarket, according to Vicki Kaplan, of Carlsbad, Calif., has an automatic water-mister to keep produce fresh. She continues, “Just before it goes on, you hear the sound of distant thunder and the scent of fresh rain. When you approach the milk coolers, you hear cows mooing and experience the aroma of fresh hay. When you approach the egg case, you hear hens clucking, and the air is filled with the pleasing tang of bacon and eggs frying. The produce department features the fragrance of fresh buttered corn.” But she notes, “I no longer buy toilet paper at that store.”
